Nancy Spero used the imagery of war to condemn gendered violence. During the historical time, she believed women were seen as objects during combat in Vietnam. There were rape, bomb and war infringing human rights in the murals of 1988. She depicted women as ambitious, strong in the history of man. In the ‘sperm bomb’ imagery, which was commonly referred to as the ‘Male bomb’ by then, she accused states of excessive violence that men’s’ bodies were constricted to gush out chemical gas and cluster bombs to flay skin of children, incinerate, to poison, to torture, and kill. And through descriptions like ‘male bomb.’ Gave impassioned defence of men’s decline to share their fantasies and bodies as weapons.
Spero ensured that violence and feminism cases were recognized. Through paintings of Vietnam, conflict reminded people of violence in Vietnam. She used FUCK logo in 1966, Painting missiles depicting naked bodies of bloodied unknown people. Fuck was coded to mean war situation. And through war, all these inhuman things happened, so it was wise to use every opportunity of either conflict or war to send messages to people.FUCK also symbolized naked, bloodied women that showed the impact of war on women, and to make it more expressive, they were naked and unarmed as it happened Vietnam war.FUCK also meant sex due to increased rape cases during the war. Figures were used in the paintings to attract men’s attention.
On many occasions, she managed to send the message. By condemning war also fought gender violence in many images, the message sent is about gender-based. Body parts and were good blend. Nancy Spero was born on August 24, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, and she passed away on October 18, 2009. She became famous for her imagery representing women in codex form that now has turned to many themes of violence and feminism. Went to the Art Institute of Chicago and married a painter Leon Golub. And they had three children together. She labelled women as the protagonist by showing their suffering as a human phenomenon. In politics, she was a guru in as she spoke loudly on women’s unfair treatment, violence and war through images.
A woman’s status has been raised in the society through her work; anti-war activism and male art were the true achievements. There are still displays of her work at Serpentine Gallery from 1956-2002. In the second wave, her easel paintings, archetypes subversion and patriarchal repudiation, her mark still stand on ink, pencil, collage and paper. Her display varies from women in violent conditions, porn stars, Egyptian, Maenads, Greek-vase, cartwheeling and vestal virgins. So all this shows ancient time turning and blending with modern. Azur was produced in 2002, which was her format in many decades and easy to read but stubborn that was meant to hang in the 1960s and 1960s. That succeeded in the black paintings. As much as I agree with her on using war to condemn gender violence, I also disagree with her and find a better platform to show feminism. War and violence-affected all people in Vietnam, but branding men superior or destructive to women was unfair and demeaning women to the point of drawing naked images and using the word like FUCK that were not moral or called for during the war. After the battle, people are mourning for the loss of loved ones and the people they have lost, and it was not prudent to bring such issues up.
Conclusively in the first phase of women activism Spero started by branding women as Protagonists and painting walls with images that attracted men and the world’s attention. It brought a new revolution on activism and politicking due to impacts and contributions that it got to the society is remarkable. The support that women gave her was a true indication that imagery impacted how people could think and change their habits. Gendered violence was recognized. At least the society tried to find rational, amicable solutions and find rationality in men thinking towards women and acknowledge that women are also human beings. Imagery formed a new pillar of many revolutions on activism and gender-based violence in the world.
