What Search Engines Say About Women

Noble illustrates the effects of different biases and algorithms that search engines have on the users. In this case, she explores the search for black girls on Google and the way it does not lead to communities that may allow black girls to come together or books that illustrate their history or different ways through which they may empower themselves (Noble, 2012). However, it shows pornography as the top results. Noble further illustrates the way search engines can maintain unequal representation and access; instead, they are the foundational aspects of modern life where they are mostly questioned. She also finds that the commercial interest of the search engine leads to a change in the representations (Noble, 2012).

Noble uses her article to illustrate these different things, and she has incorporated different rhetoric that ensures that the message is well represented. She demonstrates a serious tone to show the gravity of the matter and brings out different sentences in conjunction with actual figures and actual sites to paint the picture on what she is saying. She is stern, and she presents all this information in short sentences that are packed with information. Noble has simplified the information in her article to make it accessible and understandable by a general audience. For instance, when she passes, information about web indexing she uses simple words and this gives information more accurately, and the broad audience can understand what she means to say: “Google’s search process is based on identifying and assigning value to various types of information through web indexing” (Noble, 2012). The reduction in jargon and heavy words allows a more generalized audience to understand the intended message.

The article is divided into two and three columns, and this makes the article shorter but packed. Information is clearly illustrated with the topic sentences often carry on information to show what is to come in the paragraph. Their blocks of texts that are placed in between the paragraphs and these have been used to bring out the main points in each page. They are information-packed, and they illustrate the message of the author in summary. Paragraphs used in the article are short, and they are easy to understand as well as well written to ensure that the reader remains engaged. There is a mixture of decorative fonts and texts, and these are meant to differentiate the main text from the page summary. The page summary is written with different fonts and bright colours that may catch one who is moving around the article fast. There is a lot of art used, and this is used to illustrate the connections in the story the main title of the article is missed connections, and this is shown with the pins and connecting strings.

Noble is portraying how the search engines even though they have the abilities to display information that do not prioritize the most sexists, racists and explicit formulations based on different identities they continually do so. They bring out stereotypical representations that insist on a lack of economic, political, and social context in the search (Noble, 2012).  The article is meant to bring awareness of the responsibilities that the major search engines have in guiding the beliefs and the information, and these are intended to change the stereotypical information (Noble, 2012). The information in the article is highly essential, and it is relevant in that it explores the representation of specific communities on the internet and how search engines can assist in reducing the stereotypic representation into one that portrays the Blacks and the Latinas in a better light (Noble, 2012)t.

The authenticity of the information used in the article is well set, and all information presented is given out with the actual links from where the data is retrieved from genuine websites and names. Noble cites this information by mentioning the source of information in every ice of information that she brings out in her article.
