Twentieth Century Art & Music

The musical and artistic “isms” in the twentieth Century are impressionism, Liberalism, primitivism and nationalism. They played a massive role in the history of music (Di Martino, D. 2016). Primitive saw Christianity as the search for a purer and more ancient form of religion that wants people to do what is just and compassionate. The goal was to re-establish Christianity in its original form. However, the celebration of religion, especially Christianity, was not the primary motivator for the impressionists. They viewed the world in terms of scientific discoveries rather than religion.

Nationalism tends to present a captivating picture of National development. The moral debate brought about by nationalism reflects the moral pull of solidarity and the treatment of ethnic and cultural differences within people (Toomey, M. (2018). Nationalism creates moral value and understanding, such as freedom and equality. It emphasizes determining our own identity as people. Individual’s principle depends on having a stable personal identity; therefore, the conditions going along with it must be preserved and encouraged. It also contributes uniquely to the diversity of human cultures.

Christians can adopt Liberalism because it stood for freedom of individual rights, capitalism, racial equality and gender equality of all before the law. Liberals believed they required a free economy and limited government. Liberalism accepts and respects opinions from each other and creates openness to new ideas. It supports nonviolent solutions to problems and takes protecting and enhancing the freedom of an individual equally important. It is difficult for Christians to work in an artistic or musical form whose philosophy is opposed to the Christian worldview because the words may mean differ from what they believe.
