The text identifies four basic types of speech delivery. What are the four types and give an example of each?
The four basic types of speech delivery are impromptu speech, manuscript speech, extemporaneous speech, and memorized speech. Impromptu speech usually occurs when a person is requested to give a toast on a special event or “say a few words”. Spoken a conversational manner using brief notes, extemporaneous speeches are the presentations of cautiously rehearsed and planned speeches (Grubb & Hemby, 2018). The extemporaneous speaker can create and maintain eye contact with the audience by using notes instead of full manuscripts and examine how well they are comprehending the speeches as it progresses. The speakers maintain their attention on the printed pages except when utilizing visual aids in manuscript speeches. For instance, reading statements about the legal obligation of the organization to felons may need that the original words be exact. Memorized speeches are rote written message recitation that the speakers have committed in memory. Whenever the actors perform from scripts in movie scenes, stage plays, or television programs, they recite from memory.
What are the likely results of using each type when communicating with offenders?
Understanding when to listen can be a powerful tool of communication in the criminal justice system. A heightened sense of situational and contextual awareness is the most vital attribute of an excellent communicator (Grubb & Hemby, 2018). Good communication begins by comprehending people we are communicating with and what states they are in that can be accomplished through careful observations and listening. Skilled criminologists in this way understand how to modify their messages to specific audiences without compromising the contents they plan to communicate. It is most vital to begin by listening for effective communication in criminal justice.
How should officers speak with suspects, witnesses, victims? Why?
People place a high level of significance on respect and are usually ready to give vital information to the individuals who treat them with respect, including the police. The police officers should not belittle citizens as they respond much better to courteous behaviors than to show domination or force (Grubb & Hemby, 2018). Depending on the situation, police officers should show respect while physically neutralizing or restraining citizens. The respect levels the police officers show directly affect the respect level they receive.
How should officers deal with persons suspected of violent offenses? Why?
Not everyone is treated as a suspect. That would be an investigative bias and does not endear one to the victim or witnesses Grubb & Hemby, 2018). Especially in the case of any major crime, everyone is a suspect. The vast majority of a cops’ job is spent dealing with people who have committed terrible crimes, want to hurt the officer, and want to run from the officer. Because of this, officers are always on guard and cautious.
