THE SHINING
The shining is the title of this horror movie, created by Kubrick’s films, who are also the movie producers. The movie is staged and acted in Overlook hotel, which operates between June and the month of October due to the winter season, then closes for the next seven months until the following year on June 15th. During this winter period, the hotel is inaccessible. The road is covered with a thick layer of ice, making it difficult to drive to the hotel living it under the care of a caretaker who lives inside together with his family. The movie starts with the main character being Jack Torrance, who is hired as the new caretaker who would stay with his family until winter is over, and the hotel resumes its normal operations.
The Overlook Hotel has masked itself as a safe, lovely, and enjoyable place for the family. The film starts on a scary note when the Overlook hotel manager narrates to Jack Torrance the creepy story of the former caretaker who was suspected of having suffered mental disease, killing his family of two girls; their mother the shot himself through the mouth. The details of this gruesome murder don’t seem to worry jack; rather, he laughs it is off and makes a joke about it and even promising the manager that nothing of the sort will happen under his watch. Before they moved to the hotel, Wendy jack’s wife had taken their son Danny to the doctor since he had wired dreams. We get to know jack Torrance had a problem with anger management issues from the hospital; even at one time, he dislocated Danny’s arm when punishing him.
In the film, it is revealed that there is more than that feeling of loneliness that was described by the hotel manager. More evil spirits hover around the hotel, more so in room 237, where the previous caretaker used to live with his family, which he killed. It is scary that Danny has visions of things to happen even before they physically happen, through his invisible friend, who he claims tells him things to happen before they do. On the closing day at the hotel, Danny and the hotel’s chef have a conversation that reveals the truth that the workers might have had a clue of what happens in the hotel.
Between the first three months of staying in the overlook hotel, jack had changed from the loving father to Danny and Wendy’s husband to become an angry person, and the mask of the hotel is shed off. Jack even tries to kill his family due to the imaginary dead caretaker, who gives him ideas on punishing his family. The hotel’s horror unfolds when he chases his son with an ax around the maze, but his son manages to confuse him with the footsteps. It’s not right to say that Wendy’s character is there to scream; she plays a big role; unfolding the main actor’s past character, shows understanding and compassion to both the son and the husband.
