The narrative of women being a lesser being compared to men
In the 1800s, The regime considered to be second-class citizens, and the norm was widely accepted. Their sphere of interest was generally based on homes and family. During that time, women had specified roles and were based on families, unlike males. Women were constrained and confined under strict conditions that left them to enjoy limited rights and freedoms. For instance, women were not allowed to get a real education and pursue their careers. Apart from that, it was positively forbidden for women to own properties and earn any form of wages. Women did not enjoy some rights, such as voting or being elected to leadership positions. During the 1800s, men were considered powerful creatures and enjoyed most rights and freedoms than women. However, decades later, women organized intense political activities that saw them enjoy some rights and freedoms. Being sponsored by some influential women leaders, women stagged numerous demonstrations to win their rights and freedoms. Eventually, women were able to win some rights and liberties that brought them closer to be compared by men.
In the current regime, women are considered equal to men and enjoy the same rights and freedoms as men. For instance, we have seen several female leaders across the world. Nearly all women worldwide are educated, and all governments have set education as a requirement for every human being regardless of gender. Last but not least. Currently, women have the right to vote, own properties, and work in any field to earn a living. In general, the narrative that men were powerful compared to women is a thing of the past. The current regime treats men and women equally, and all rights and freedom accorded to human beings are enjoyed jointly between the two genders.
As said in my earlier discussion, women came second to men over the past decades and centuries, and they never enjoyed the same rights and freedoms. Upon the review of Maxine Hong Kingston’s “No Name Woman.”, Kingston (the author of the book) was told by his mom that there was once a woman who killed herself and her infant baby by jumping into a well in China. Her decision was prompted by the fact that she had given birth to a girl child without her husband’s presence. Over the last centuries, most communities regarded the girl child as useless and worthless. The woman decided to kill herself because she had received backlash from the community as a whole, and she thought she was saving her baby from the intimidation she was to receive in the future. The books also stated that women had tight moral laws, and any sexual passion out of marriage was highly prohibited. Finally, any form of adultery and incest upon women was a severe offense, and any perpetrator was disowned.
On the other hand, Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl, a mother, tries to raise her daughter into the life she ought for her. In his book, Kincaid tries to use semicolons to separate the admonishments and words of wisdom to show how the mother was molding her daughter to not become a slut. The mother teaches her daughter how to live a fulfilling life to help her own when she grows up and gets married. Generally, the mother teaches the daughter how to go about men and how they should be treated in marriage. From the book, Jamaica Kincaid tries to communicate to users that a girl child was supposed to be molded into a responsible creature over the past decades. Unlike men, girls were supposed to have the highest courtesy. Girls who became sluts were highly condemned, which is why the mother never wanted her daughter to live that kind of life. She feared that her daughter would be condemned by society.
The two books were written at different times, but all of them had a similar theme regarding the girl child’s sanity. Both books revealed that the girl child was treated differently compared to the boy child. Regarding societal sanity, the community believed that the girl child was supposed to be pure compared to the boy child. This generally meant that men and women in the past decade did not enjoy similar rights and privileges. Men enjoyed several rights that women never enjoyed, and men were believed to be significant compared to women.
However, as said in my earlier discussion, the narrative of women being a lesser being compared to men has been declining over the past centuries. Women in America and all over the world have stood up and fought for their rights. Several women organization movements currently in America and worldwide are advocating for women’s rights and freedom. Such organizations have changed the belief that men are superior compared to women. Apart from that, the women movement programs have got more women to join them to advocate for equality for all human beings. However, there is still more to be done because total equality has not yet been achieved. There are many reports that some women are always disregarded, especially in the marginalized areas of the world. Women are still denied some rights, such as owning properties, legally representing themselves, joining some career field, and being sexually abused, among others.
