History Lenses
History refers to the narrative of humanity’s past. Historians could use resources, including magazines, photographs, newspapers, diaries, books, oral testimonies, artifacts, and arts, to check the events’ pattern and flow. The experts, as mentioned above, focus on causality. Hence predestinate outcomes happen as planned, and how they are connected to earlier happenings (Kulkarni, 2015). Since 1970, the health workplace’s significant change is outstanding; essentially, there were important, fewer minorities, women, and older workers. However, through history, humankind learns that humans are still evolving since segregation and slavery.
Consequently, numerous books, magazines, and newspaper articles depict nescient days when people could be cast out of the community due to differences in sexual preference, religion, age, or color. Notably, the US declaration of liberty, independence state life, and pursuance of happiness promises inclusion and acceptance. Further, major workplaces are changing to keep up with the current times; people can express themselves regardless of gender; a significant increase in immigrants is also experienced.
Genetic counseling encompasses cultural competence and cross-culture counseling, which emphasizes the significance of the counselor’s culture and the culture of the patient. However, such practices are affected by historical issues on cultural beliefs. Different people exhibit different cultural practices that could not be easily understood by others. Nonetheless, a culturally-based competent counselor can identify the effects of their own beliefs on communication with peers and patients (Uhlmann et al.,2011). Besides, the patient’s preference and alteration in cross-cultural counseling are often associated with the counselor’s years of experience and age; based on cultural similarity, counselors with limited clinical experience and young counselors can alter their counseling. Consequently, the significance of education and family are cultural aspects that are reasoned to impact the respondent’s approach to genetic counseling.
Further, the way information is delivered significant in the health workplace. Nonetheless, historical matters pose challenges to the activity above due to its impacts on the languages spoken. Health providers and the patients in health workplaces recognize certain languages, although there is uncertainty on its effectiveness since different people have a diverse understanding of the commonly preferred languages. Such language barriers could keep healthcare service providers and patients from developing a strong human relationship, thus posing a significant deterrent to an optimistic patient’s experience (Soled,2020). Alongside different language proficiencies, patients value affirmative communications with healthcare service providers. Active listening skills, commendable patient-provider relationships, and trust in healthcare service providers are necessary to build a rapport. However, such an approach may not be effective due to language variations among individuals of different cultures and ethnicity. Besides, the communication for both patient and provider is strained. Patients lose trust as providers face a challenge in eliciting the patient’s activation.
Humanities lens Analysis
The humanities aspect pertains to global cultures, whereby differences and similarities among various cultures are drawn. Notably, the humanities lens widens the perception and enhances more understanding of various cultures, experiences, and beliefs by using forms that are humanly created. Such mediums include photography, literature, dance, fine arts, and philosophy that exploit the procedures and processes of how individuals can represent and comprehend humanity’s human experiences. Generally, there is a challenge in understanding the terms used in health workplaces due to variations in languages that different individuals are comfortable with. Such miscommunication can threaten life in the health sector. The increasing number of foreign-skilled healthcare service providers and migrant patients seeking treatment implies high chances of communication errors between the patient and the healthcare service provider. Hence, humanities lens techniques are essential in passing information concerning health (Kulkarni, 2015). In instances where the patient and the healthcare practitioner do not use a common language, non-verbal aids, comprising photographs, and videos are used to enhance messages comprehension. Essentially, photographs are necessary to complement a commendable clinical evaluation since it enables the medical practitioner to highlight and pick up minor asymmetries.
Further, the use of visuals is significantly necessary from a medico-legal aspect—the technique mentioned above aids in avoiding allegations caused by inadequate or improper surgery. The accuracy in shape and size, background, contrast, exposure, position, and brightness is useful when deriving conclusive results; consequently, comparing postoperative and preoperative photos. Besides, when communicating with patients with minimal understanding of various health issues and language barriers posed by diversity, visual aids such as photographs with clear illustrations improve their understanding (Kulkarni, 2015). Therefore, enabling effective communication between patients and healthcare practitioners of different ethnicity.
