The Lady with the Dog
Antony Chekhov intends his readers of the book “The Lady with the Dog” to know and understand the deception in love. Antony Chekhov gives a story of an older man called Dmitri Gurov who lives in Moscow, married to one wife and has three children but hampered to several illicit relationships. The protagonist is dissatisfied in his marriage and looks down upon his wife, and as a result, he is unfaithful to her. Gurov meets Anna Sergeyevna in Yalta and gets involved in fornication with her when both of them are on vacation as they run away from their spouses. Deception causes Anna and Dmitri to make difficult decisions of living together openly at the end of the story.
Chekhov intends his readers to be transformed from the male dominancy. Dmitri looks at all women to be in ‘the lower race’ till he meets Anna, the lady with the dog during his vacation in Yalta. Dmitri treats all women without compassion and respect. When Dmitri meets Anna, he is obsessed with her and decides to approach her. They both engage in a polite conversation and end up in Anna’s room in a hotel where they express their affection for each other through fornication. After having several scheduled dates, Gurov changes his notion concerning women.
Chekhov intends the readers to know about peoples’ expectations and reality. Gurov expected that meeting Anna and engaging in illicit love would be his usual fling. He thought that after he had left Yalta for Moscow, he would forget about Anna, but this is not the case. When he gets back to his home in Moscow, he still thinks about Anna and keeps off his wife. The reality is that for both of them, the affair is meaningful, and the experience is unforgettable.
The author brings out the difference between public life and private life. The public life is all about societal expectations while private life is a more accurate reflection of the inherent beliefs, feelings, and desires. Dmitri was still married to her wife despite his illicit relationship because the society couples to be united forever in marriage. Privately, Gurov looked down upon his wife but had a genuine love for Anna.
Through the book, people get to know the transformative power of love. At first, the affair between Anna and Gurov is not aimed at marriage, but at the end of the story they both end up making a difficult decision of living together despite both of them being married. Out of love, Dmitri gets to have another view of women. Initially, he viewed women as people of the lower race, but after meeting Anna, his notion is changed.
