One thing I am observing in the classroom is the close interaction students have with each other. Every time they are given some work to do, they partner and do it together or naturally fall into groups and discuss together. They are also smiling at one another, sharing learning materials, and creating a friendly environment. They are also very friendly with their teachers and interact freely. These students are paying attention to everything the teacher teaches and answering the questions asked. The teacher starts the class by asking them about things they learned the previous lesson, and they all participate in answering the questions asked
The connection between Students’ behaviors, Social-emotional learning, and executive functioning
The students’ behavior is a clear sign that each one of them is self-aware of his/her emotions and thoughts and that they understand how these emotions and thoughts can influence their behavior. These students can regulate their emotions and behavior in different situations. Almost all of them are starting and completing tasks in time and without any trouble. They remember everything taught and have well-developed relationship skills, such as accurately listening and working together.
How to implement social-emotional learning?
One best way of implementing SEL is to align SEL approaches to the responsibilities and expectations faculty already have on students’ education. The faculty must have a deep understanding of the theory and literature of SEL. The students should also be partners in the implementation, and this way, the goal will be achieved. With support from the entire school, implementation will be a natural activity.
The executive Functioning skill I want to Teach
Working memory is the executive skill I would like to teach tomorrow. It is a mental skill that enables the brain to retain new information briefly when required in the short term. It then moves the information to long-term memory. Working memory helps students to work with information by learning and performing basic tasks with it temporarily. As a kid, I had a problem remembering information given a few minutes ago. I was able to remember things that happened in the past but not what just happened. I performed well in end term examinations but could not answer a question from a lesson taught the same day. Now I know how important working memory is for students from as early as kindergarten.
