Terrorism in Central and South America
The terrorist group in the region that I identified is the National Liberation Army in Colombia. The group is motivated by political and economic issues. People who follow the group state that the country has been given away to the West, and thereby it is essential that such resources are no longer occupied by the West. As a result, they often target critical government infrastructure and people who cooperate with the West. The motivator can be assessed through the perspective of ISIS. Each group is against foreign intervention in domestic affairs.
The terrorist groups assert that social-economic and political reasons are the main issues that they would love to be addressed by the government. The state has also been blamed for excluding certain groups and people in society instead of building a nation that considers or treats everyone in equal measure (Kushner, & Sage Publications. 2013). The goal of the organization is to address poverty and government corruption through the use of Marxist approaches. It also aims at eradicating unequal or unfair government participation that has been evident in Colombia for a long time.
The group has popular support will thousands of people in Colombia vowing to fight to achieve some of the goals that it has developed in the past. There is very little or no link to Islamic Jihad. Religion has never been an issue of contention in the group. However, the group has been copying some of the methods that are employed by Islamic Jihadi groups in the Middle East. The use of similar tactics in a kidnapping while demanding ransoms is also popular among terror groups such as ISIS in the Middle East. The group poses to be a great threat to the United States. Many Americans go to Colombia for vacations, and they could easily be maimed or targeted by the group.
