Steps in Shortening Critical path
When developing a project schedule, there are to step that are essentials which are creating the project network and calculating the duration of activities carried out in the project. For these steps to be successful, the information needs to be combined to generate the project critical path plan. After combining these activities, their durations are estimated, and the construction of a critical path begins where it links these activity durations to the preconstructed project activities network. This will help the project managers determine the overall time taken to complete the project and discover activity float. Critical path refers to a series of dependent activities of a project that are connected to determine the shortest total time taken for a project. The longest path of the network determines the shortest total length of a project.
When shortening the critical path, project managers may apply different steps. Among the appropriate steps identified in shortening the critical path include finding the probability of various project activities durations. This implies that there is a variation in the duration of activities in the project, which may delay project completion, therefore appropriate to find their probabilities. This will equip project managers with important information, not only the time to complete the project but also have confidence in the estimates of the duration of each activity. This is because this approach depicts two assumptions which are the completion time is a normal probability distribution and the activities time in the project are independent.
The other step that is appropriate in shortening the critical path is hammock activities. This implies summarizing the activities in a project and estimate the cost and duration of a task. This approach is helpful as it will assist the project managers in breaking down complex project activities. Also, it is useful as it will assist in budgeting for activities that are shared among the different department of the project.
