Psychological development stages by Erickson focuses on various crises resolutions that enable one to become a complete person. Erickson took Freud’s controversial theory concerning psychosexual development and developed it to psychological theory. He emphasized that ego contributes positively to the development of positive ideas, attitudes, and skills. This enables children to be successful and productive society members. In each of the eight stages, there are psychological conflicts that one must successfully fight to overcome for one to grow into a healthy and well-adjusted adult.
The video talks of the eight psychological development stages. It asserts that psychological development is based on the psychosexual theory of Freud. This is in line with the arguments made by Erikson. Also, it asserts that there are eight development stages over people’s lifespan. It also believes that each stage is accompanied by tasks or crisis that needs to be resolved. In the end, the video has it that successful completion of all development tasks results in the sense of personality competence and health. All these are in line with Erikson’s arguments.
The most important thing that I have learned from the video is that each of the eight stages is accompanied by cultural development stages. This can easily help me in overcoming personal related challenges by making me understand that certain cultures need to resolve these stages in different ways by their survival and cultural needs.
Lecture 6
Topic: Personality Traits
Article Citation: Corr, P. J., DeYoung, C. G., & McNaughton, N. (2013). Motivation and Personality: A Neuropsychological Perspective. Social and Personality Psychology Compass, 7(3), 158-175. doi:10.1111/spc3.12016
The purpose of the study was to summarize the characteristics of personality traits found in different individuals. To test this, different individuals were asked the same simple personal questions but responded differently. Others did not even respond. The results of the study were that some traits were unique in a certain person while other traits were common/shared by some people. The limitations of the study were that some traits kept on changing in individuals over time due to changes in social status and values.
The conclusion made in this study is that there are common and individual traits in every individual. Secondly, common traits are more likely to change with time. Future directions on such a study are that culture needs to be included when carrying out such a study.
