Skills in Civil Engineering
Civil engineering has become an integral part of contemporary society. Civil engineers continuously come up with ways to protect and improve our environment. Engineers design and supervise construction of railways, airports, harbors, dams and other projects that involve technical skills and keen attention to detail. Engineers are responsible for almost all structures that exist on the face of the earth. A successful engineer prides himself in knowing that his or her creation leaves a positive impact in the society.
A major in civil engineering equips the learner with a variety of skillsets. Firstly, being in charge of mega projects requires an engineer that will inspire and lead his team to meet deadlines within time. The responsibilities bestowed upon an engineer to complete various projects require leadership skills. It involves planning and prioritizing activities as well as authoritatively making decisions that keep workers motivated. Leadership skills learned when studying a major in civil engineering can also be used in solving another day to day problems.
Additionally, studying civil engineering will develop my decision-making skills since civil engineers are required to have decision-making skills that integrate available information, conflicting goals while professionally considering different opinions from all involved. Engineers must be confident in the decisions they make based on trusting the information they gather and that provided by other workers. Decisions made by engineers should also consider the ever-changing needs ever growing populations. Sometimes engineers are required to take calculated risks to achieve specific objectives. Taking this risks has led to the innovation of new technologies that have made the world a better place. Informed decision-making processes are used in everyday situations when faced with conflicting choices.
Furthermore, engineers are required to have clear, understandable communication skills. Clear oral communication allows engineers to delegate duties and follow up on the progress of projects. They should also have written communication skills through which they communicate with other relevant professionals. Communication skills are not only limited to engineering but also used in almost every aspect of our lives. Effective communication inspires productivity from processes put in place with the aim of achieving specific objectives.
