- Identify problems in the relationship, including one’s own role in the problems- Evident in the case, the two have a communication challenge. In this case, the couple can be assigned “a between session task” to record the positive and problematic attributes about the other significant. The couple should be requested not to show each other their task until the next session.
- Commit to change a specific behavior- after identifying the issue, the couple should be requested to process the list of both positive and negative attributes written by the significant other. .
The couple will be helped to increase the frequency of direct expression of respectful, honest and positive feelings and thoughts within the relationship.
- Help the clients learn how to initiate verbal and physical attention behavior towards the significant other- in this case, Courtney is complaining that Jamie no longer initiates physical contact as he used to do. The counselor should encourage increased use of verbal and physical affection by addressing any resistance surrounding initiating affectionate interactions.
