Sandy Hook Elementary School
The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting happened on 14th December 2012 in Newton, Connecticut, US, with Adam Lanza as the perpetrator. Lanza, 20 years old, showed at the school compound after killing his mother. At the school, he opened fire and caused the death of 26 persons, 20 of whom were children between six and seven years, and six were adults (“Nation reels after gunman massacres 20 children at school in Connecticut, 2012). Two staff members sustained injuries. Once Lanza committed the shootout, he then shot himself. The incident was a significant blow in Connecticut. Besides, the Jones and Infowars were ordered to compensate $ 100000 to cover the emotional distress they had caused about the incident. Sides, the school was demolished at the cost of US$ 1.4 million. After the demolition, the state was to facilitate the reconstruction cost of $50 million. The overall proposed reconstruction budget was $57million and was approved through a public vote that favored the demolition and reconstruction of Sandy Hook Elementary School (Chaney, & Robertson, 2013).
What caused the incident was a security breach whereby the perpetrator was able to get into the school compound and managed to shoot at the elementary students and staff members within his range. The perpetrator was able to get into the school compound through the front gate. Lanza’s continuous shooting and using different firearms in his basement motivated him to commit the shootout at the elementary school (Shultz, Muschert, Dingwall, A., & Cohen, 2013). Following the shootout, the government and the leading persons in the region. The school was closed indefinitely and later opened the following year on 3rd January. School requested the redesigning of the freedom of information Act to prevent the release of the crime scene’s photos and videos at the school.
