- Undeniably, becoming a successful leader, entrepreneur or a boss like Tony, requires patients, tackling challenges, learning, taking risks and even making loses, among other things.
- Besides, making a change in a company can be challenging like Tony’s effort to reinvent Zappos through holacracy. Sometimes becoming a horrible boss will make you achieve what you want. To support holacracy, Tony wrote a memo to ask and giving an offer to employees who think holocracy does not fit Zappos culture. Notably, in 2013, Zappos became the largest organization to adopt holacracy.
- Tony displays excellent characteristics of a leader who embraces teamwork and believes in his employees. He is not presenting himself as the boss but a team member by joking and having fun with employees. Besides, he values community as be believes it is a platform to connect and learn new things.
- A unique culture where customers were made happy through free deliveries no matter the time, they placed order and vendors were respected. The practice cannot even be compared with the culture of Amazon as they charge for deliveries without pleasing.
- Entertaining and housing employees for free has not been done by Amazon; the most successful online shop. Indisputably, business requires risks and strategies, and despite the cost, Tony was incurring in deliveries he managed to propel Zappos to greater heights. Like the powerful marketing strategy was communication, and instead, the marketing money was used in making customers happy.
- The culture that Tony cultivated in reinventing organization displayed uniqueness that does not apply to many companies. Creating fun and little weirdness was one way of building a customer base and forming a relationship with employees, vendors and clients. Besides, he was also adventurous as he tried many business and partnerships before becoming a CEO at Zappos.
- Furthermore, business growth requires learning, creating room for improvement with little resources you have, being passionate and determined as well as embracing and driving change so long as there is a reason why. Tony pushed for holacracy, and thus, what made Zappos attract the attention of Amazon.
- Success in a business is a rough path that involves reinvention of the organization through the execution of the change process.
