Racism
Racism is the biasness or discrimination that is influenced by skin color, race, cultural environment, religion, background, and experiences. The concern is how best to deal with institutional racism across the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). In the recent past, there have been various conferences on the Building the Anti-racist University.
The development of fundamental institutional guidelines was an approach to bring up an institutional racial equality change, whereas this might face various challenges that have been met before, for instance, not gaining full support from other states. The multiple ranges of issues debated under the umbrella are regarding academic staff, students, and the knowledge system in place; thereby, there are multiple key themes on institutional racism that are given priority to help in this endeavor.
To go about discrimination in our Higher Learning Institutions and build that’ post-race’ society, students have mobilized to public meetings in institutions due to very minimal change towards racial justice transformation, where a good number of them have led their attachment to various global campaigns, for instance, ‘#Black Lives Matter’ such campaigns and debates that are campus-based have gone a long way in terms of sensitization and minimizing racism.
Some of the issues are the transformation of organizational culture that has faced various challenges. Some students have gone ahead to create some notions such as ‘why is my lecturer white?’ up through the ranks, there has been a challenge of balancing or equitability among the heads of institutions. In various panels, there have been issues to do with decisions making when a certain race brings about an opinion that is not taken into consideration, however much good or bad it may be.
The dominance of those racialized as a white, indigenous presence that is receiving quit increasing attention hence the inadequate progression of black and ethnic minority students as far as the academic workforce is concerned(Mocombe, 2017). Coming up with curriculum interventions that will ensure no racism in the context of professional influence, disciplinary inertia, and resistance in the organization to achieve this very fair contribution to the institution has to be seen in the entire institution among the campus leadership.
The social body as skin and the sensitivity is central to Whiteness as well as the theme of the struggle against racism (Kenyon, 2018). There have been policies put in place to curb racism through the universities in various States such are the anti-racist actions, Black Rights Movement.
Even after the adoption of these policies, it is still clear that much has to be done since there has not been much done to the implementation of these policies. These include contraction of teachers at Higher Learning Institutions as well in postgraduate schools where there have been very minimal actions to these.
Whiteness, more so in a government setup, enjoy so many privileges thus includes personal benefits and entitlement because they feel protected by their skin color. This makes blacks feel less privileged hence inferior in such a setup. In institutions, there has been discrimination where the white students think that they are more privileged and hence even miss debates with an idea of segregation(Maitzen, 2019).
Inconclusion, racial desperation in a factor as far as higher learning institutions are concerned that is in the United States, where Whiteness feels more privileged and tends to override on others’ rights, thereby the discrimination in terms of race is distinctive. This should be put to an end by developing better policies to contain this and reduce to zero.
