Professionalism refers to behavior and code of conduct of individuals in a workplace that demonstrate high levels of skills suitable for the job. As a nurse, there exist several professional values regarding professionalism. When individuals exercise such values on top of their profession, they qualify to be referred to as proficient professionals.
Firstly, social justice plays a key role in one of the values. The term refers to fairness between professionals and members of the society. They should exercise the value socially, economically, and politically to achieve equity. As a nurse, I would demonstrate social justice by taking care of patients with equal measurements that are efficient and fair to all of them.
Secondly, altruism defined as the act of prioritizing other people’s needs before taking care of personal interests. One would make sure individuals benefit from self-sacrificing. As a nurse, I can effectively demonstrate altruism by sacrificing the days I am off for work to take care of patients and creating a strong relationship with them.
Thirdly, human dignity as a professional value. Scholars define the concept as the ability to value their worthiness as human beings; therefore, holding respect to others. I can exercise human dignity by respecting patients and other health professionals at the workplace regardless of their competence or position.
Fourthly, autonomy means the ability to make personal decisions as professionals. I demonstrated the value as a nurse by rightfully taking more time with patients to nursing the injuries so that their condition improves.
The fifth value referred to as accountability, which means making decisions that can be taken care of or being responsible for them, including their consequences. As a nurse, I demonstrated the value by being responsible for giving a patient more rest days at the hospital.
Lastly, integrity refers to behaving in an honest manner that this morally right. I can exercise the value by rightfully taking care of patients to make sure they take their prescribed drugs as per the instructions.
