Plagiarism
I agree that plagiarism may be intentional or unintentional. When researching, one can implore other authors’ works and, as such, must give credit to that author. Intentionally or unintentionally, a writer may use this work without giving due reference leading to plagiarism. Under such a case, they are said to have engaged in plagiarism and may require punitive measures (Oxford University, 2020). Generally, plagiarism is a serious academic offense that may attract serious punitive measures such as discontinuation from studies and expulsion.
Unintentional plagiarism occurs when a person uses work from a source and fails to cite unknowingly. For instance, a student may write technical terms that may appear plagiarized without their knowledge. The person who presents this work as their own may not have the intention to cheat that. Intentional plagiarism involves presenting work that was already done and claiming to be yours (Gullifer & Tyson, 2011). Due to unmet deadlines, some scholars end up presenting other people’s work or a part of it as their own without giving due acknowledgment. As such, willingly knowingly stealing information from other people’s work.
Providing punitive actions in cases involving plagiarism should occur on an individual to individual basis. At times, plagiarism happens by accident. For instance, a student may willingly want to cite an article but forgets due to the length of the article, resulting in plagiarism. Therefore, special considerations should be provided to that student. On the other hand, an individual who willingly and intentionally uses information from a source and fails to cite must face stringent and punitive measures (Gullifer & Tyson, 2011). However, each degree of the case should be handled individually to avoid giving punishment to undeserving individuals.
