I believe that the goal of early childhood education is to support and advance children’s development by engaging them in play and education in conducive environments that enable toddlers, infants and children up to third grade to develop the necessary skills for the upper levels of education.
The purpose of early childhood education is to encourage children’s physical, emotional, and cognitive development through their interactions with learning material, play, and their peers. Early childhood education starts in toddlerhood and continues through third grade. It offers foundational knowledge that children need to develop the skills they will need to compete favourably in their societies and education. Usually, teachers use strategies like using play and interesting and appropriate objects for children’s ages to encourage learning.
All children have certain learning and developmental needs. These needs are cognitive needs, social relationships and family, emotional development, physical development and language development. Cognitive needs concern their mental state. Cognitive needs are usually solved through exposure to challenging situations within their capacity to solve. For instance, they need to develop critical thinking skills by doing math and science, among others. They must learn languages and make social connections with teachers, peers and parents. They must also get chances to play and be in safe environments that will enable them to develop physically as they learn through the interactions. Emotional development is also necessary. Therefore, professionals must ensure that children feel safe and want in their learning environments.
I believe that effective teaching is tailored to the needs of each child when professionals offer education that is developmentally appropriate for the children’s age. Children from toddlers to third grade grow fast. Therefore, their needs may change fast, too. Education should consider their language skills, interests, and physical capabilities. Hence, professionals should design learning that is effective for children’s age and their developmental stages and interests.
I believe that early childhood education is the responsibility of parents and teachers. Even though education should be based on children’s interests, it is mostly the parents’ responsibility, and teachers should only do what is culturally and legally appropriate. Young children are usually not cognitively prepared to make independent decisions. Hence, their parents must always be involved to ensure that decisions are favourable for the children’s growth.
I believe that early childhood education is the responsibility of the parents mostly because parents should know what is good for their children. They understand their culture and should make decisions for their children. Children are usually too young to make self-determinations. Teachers are also responsible because they spend most of their time in school with the children. Hence, they should implement the curriculum.
I believe that the early childhood learning environment is supportive of a child’s home when the professionals involve parents in the child’s learning and also base their learning on the child’s interests. Children and their families have different cultures that should be respected. Therefore, learning should consider their cultural needs and involve parents as much as possible to make the learning environment supportive of their home.
