1. Main point: The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of the yellow hat school of Buddhism in Tibet. The current leader of Tibetan Buddhism is the 14^th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso.
2. Tenzin Gyatso was born in 1935 in a small village in Tibet.
3. He was selected through a search conducted by the Buddhist officials, as stated by an article by the BBC.
   1. According to the article, “a search party of Buddhist officials recognized him as the reincarnation of the 13 previous Dalai Lamas and he was enthroned before he turned four” (BBC 2011).

1. Through a series conducted by the Buddhist officials, Tenzin Gyatso was confirmed as the reincarnation of the 13^th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso.
   1. He has been the Dalai Lama since 1940 and has served as the Dalai Lama of the Tibetan school of Buddhism for eight decades.

2. The 14^th Dalai Lama is not the leader of the world’s Buddhism. He is a charismatic leader who is an outspoken Buddhist leader and this sets her apart from the other leaders.

   1. He is tasked with the role of overseeing Buddhist practices in Tibet as well as maintaining and making relevance the culture of the people of Tibet.

Transition: Apart from being a religious leader, the Dalai Lama has played an active role in changing huis society and country as well as the rest of the world.

1. Main point: The 14^th Dalai Lama has also taken a role of being the political head of Tibet.
   1. As a political leader, he advocated for democracy in Tibet and establishing Tibet as an independent state from China.
      1. He presented a draft of the democratic constitution to democratize the government of Tibet.
   2. The Dalai Lama has been noted to preach about peace and religious harmony in the world. There are many religious groups in the world and this has led to conflict.
      1. He preaches for religious harmony as a way to foster peace in the world.
   3. Additionally, he advocates for the protection of human rights in both his country and the rest of the world in places where conflict has become dominant.
      1. As a former refugee, the Dalai Lama believes that people should treat refugees humanely as well as help them with the basic needs such as food.
