I plan to use the UH Archive over the internet to do my research.
Era/Period
The focus period is the mid of the 20th century (1940-1960) during the period of the civil rights movements. This period is critical in the life of many people of color in America.
The main reason for focusing on this period is understanding the roles that the Mexican descent played in supporting civil rights and the Mexican identity. This period is mostly linked with the civil rights movement dominated by black activities and primarily focused on their racial identity problems. There was another movement that focused on the welfare of individuals of Mexican descent.
Topic
My topic will be the Chicano movements, a political and social movement inspired by previous acts of resistance among individuals of Mexican descent. The movement worked with other groups such as the black power movement and aimed to embrace a Chicano identity and a view that battled structural racism, fostered cultural revitalization, and attained community empowerment by refusing assimilation. The movement also experienced massive state surveillance, repression, and infiltration, similar to the Black Power movement from the US government agent provocateurs and informants.
Goals and Purpose
Understand the formation of the Chicano movement.
Its connection to the civil rights movements.
The challenges the movement faced in achieving its objective.
Key players that had much impact in attaining its objective.
The current impact that can be attributed to this movement.
Research question
Why did the Mexican Americans not want to identify with the whites and choose to define their identity separately?
What were the roles that the Chicano movement player in the civil rights movements and the changes attributed to the Chicano movement?
