In this presentation, I will explain the main techniques, modalities, and philosophy that are used by Sherry Berjeron, who I had interviewed in a previous assignment. Berjeron has been teaching and practicing the Alexander technique as a way of making acupuncture more effective. I am going to explain how Berjeron applies determination, technology, and collaboration of practices that involve the mind, the spirit, and the body, in making the Alexander technique.
One of the things that we learn from Sherry Berjeron is that we learn is that for an acupuncturist to enhance their experience in the skills and techniques used together with acupuncture, there is a need to have passion with one’s career. Berjeron explains that he was able to improve his skills of incorporating Alexander technique in his care because he has had a good attitude towards his area of specialization for 25 years (Berjeron, 2019). His determination and diligence in his work made him leave some of the activities that he was previously involved in that were not part of his mainstream career. This enabled him to have time to improve his skills by having more practice and education. For example in 1974, his concentration and interest made him feel that he had to set aside some time to improve his career through research and advanced education.
Berjeron explains that the use of technology can be very helpful when administering treatment using the Alexander treatment as a supplementary way of regulating the effects of acupuncture. Through technology, the care giver can make use Power Point to demonstrate some of the things that the patient needs to do in the absence of the physician one he has gone home after treatment. In his area of specialization, Berjeron explains that he has been using Power Point to illustrate to students and patients on how the Alexander technique works and activities and games that can improve faster relieve of pain and discomfort. For example, the use of table sessions involving ‘semi spine and ‘active rests’ can be demonstrated to many patients at once. He also demonstrates how a mirror session can be used to discover misbalance and tension in a patient and how to feel normal from and overcome discomfort (Berjeron, 2019).
Apart from using the Alexander technique in controlling the discomfort and side effects of acupuncture, Berjeron learnt that some traditional Chinese practices can be very helpful in registering better results to the patient. Throughout his long-term career, he observed that the patients had improved response and results from the Alexander technique if they are taught how to have meditation Yoga mentality during the treatment process. Other practices that simultaneously combine the mind, body, and spirit when making use of the technique, according to Berjeron, include martial arts, Qi Gong, and Tai Chi (Berjeron, 2019).
Although the additional methods cannot be used solely to manage the effects of acupuncture, their proportionate application before and after the treatment can be used to make the treatment process more effective. However, the acupuncturist or the specialist in Alexander technique should not make use of these methods if he or she is not aware of how they are incorporated. The care giver should collaborate with practitioners or teachers who can help him have knowledge how these traditional Chinese methods can be incorporated in the management of pain. When used appropriately, these methods make it possible for physical stress to be relieved, which is important in pain management.
