Life is a precious commodity that no money can buy, and therefore the decision of whether someone gets to live should not be dependent on their financial situation. The cost of health care is high in many countries, especially the United States, which has the most expensive healthcare system in the world. Globally, only 43 countries have free health care, and these are only developed countries. Health is a basic need that should be accessible to all regardless of their financial capacities. It influences the quality of life that an individual and their families live. Therefore, through advocacy, I would change the unfair conditions of health systems in the world. This paper explains why I would change the health care system and how I would achieve free healthcare for all people in the world regardless of their financial ability.
Diseases cause many people to lose their ability to work, which affects the entire family, especially when they are the breadwinners. Additionally, it causes pain for the patients and devastation for their families as they hope their loved one will feel better soon. It is unfair and inhumane to add the burden of cost to such a family trying their best to survive. Families become bankrupt as all their finances go into paying for medical bills leaving the poor and hopeless. Other families have their properties auctioned because they could not pay their insurance or settle their bills. Also, some families cannot access health facilities because they are far and do not have the necessary means of transport.
Moreover, unaffordable health care has been the cause of death for many people in the world. For instance, people who cannot afford to pay for medication avoid going to hospitals for check-ups or prevention care. It affects their health, especially when they have diseases like cancer that become deadly when not detected early. By the time they go to the hospital, the disease has progressed to untreatable stages or requires them to pay massive amounts of money to access treatment. In such cases, individuals are forced to watch their loved ones suffer in pain and eventually die, all the while knowing their finances are the only reason they couldn’t save them. Those who decide to go to the hospital and get treatment end up losing the little wealth they had spent their lives working to earn.
Free health care for all can be achieved through taxation by the government from corporations and the community’s wealthier people. Taxation will generate revenue that can be used to fund hospitals and pay their staff. The government can also allocate more significant percentages of the budget to healthcare and reduce it in other sectors like the military. Also, companies working in the health sector should receive subsidies and lower taxation on their products to ensure they are cheaper and affordable. Hospitals should be built in all areas to ensure people do not travel long distances to access healthcare. Also, the cost of health introduces inequality in society as the wealthy get better services and treatment, whereas the poor struggle to meet basic needs.
In sum, I would choose to change the current healthcare system and make it free and accessible to everyone in the world because money should not be the reason why someone lives or dies. I would achieve free health by advocating for governments to fund health and reduce tax on companies in the health sector. It would save the lives of millions globally and ensure families do not have financial challenges. I believe money should never be a factor in determining life and death situations.
