Neoliberalism
Introduction
The concept of Neoliberalism has been associated with the most crucial economic challenges that we experience in the world today. The concepts argue that required that individuals be allowed the freedom of practicing business, enjoy private property rights, liberty free trade, and market. There have been conflicting views on the matter which makes it more of a political ideology. This essay seeks to highlight some political repercussions of neoliberal globalization, the 2008 crisis, its consequences. Finally, the paper examines how we can include the gender perspective in the analysis of the book.
Political Repercussions of Neoliberal Globalization
First and foremost, neoliberal globalization brought numerous benefits and drawbacks concerning economic growth. For instance, in the 1970s, there were many losers and winners in the globalization of the economy. The ideology led to uneven distribution of wealth that sparked extreme economic and political challenges such as the uprising of the Army of National Liberation against Washington and in other places (Steger, 121).
It led to strikes and protests in places such as Melbourne, Manila, Washington DC and many more. The cities protested because of the rising inequality due to the then dream of having one global market. Many political leaders rose to protect their territories and nation from what some may term the talons of the cruel “neoliberal internationalism.” Conflicting ideologies and moves led to political based violence and a series of anti-globalization demonstrations. The 9/11 attack which was staged by Osama Bin Laden was propelled by the atrocities of the chaotic justice movement.
What are the causes of the 2008 crisis? What are its consequences?
The 2008 crisis well known as the global financial crisis caused by poor economic choices that were introduced by the neoliberal governments. The activities of neoliberalism led to governments raising borrowing limits, and reducing the requirements to a certain acquisition of loans (Steger, 123). The neoliberal policies encouraged replacement of certain government functions, engaging in business with profit motivated organizations and deregulation of the market. Deregulation denied financial institution, investors and other economists the opportunity to invest their business in intricate markets (Steger, 127). Additionally, the weak economic assumption by the government and financial institutions, greed, frauds, and ignorance of the past financial crises fueled the crisis. It led to the crash of the financial markets, the collapse of the financial systems, decreased wages, profound social and political instability among other economic challenges.
The Gender perspective (or a feminist perspective)
The concept of feminism developed from the need for gender equality with regard to the economic, social and political aspect of the nation. The relationship between feminism and neoliberalism is exciting and also significant. Individual women were motivated by their drive to popularize, circulate and sell the feminism ideas in the market. This move led to the rise of neoliberal feminism. Feminists demanded a very dramatic transformation with regard to economic, social, and political transformation. Feminism gave hope for change growth because in large part women were affected so much during the global financial crisis.
Feminism encourages women to access education which gave them the power to operate effectively in economic matters. Feminism is one other incredible aspects that encouraged the restructuring of economic systems by allowing women employment opportunities. Liberalism was built under the private sphere, space where women spent much of their time working and looking after the kids. So basically women had a hard time penetrating through the public spheres. Feminism exposed economic challenges associated with gender inequalities and other elements that affected the economic space such as markets etc.
