Must Have Read and Watched the Giver

The giver is a thought-provoking and morally driven about a young boy called Jonas what been living is a society that I free from death, sadness, color, crime, pain, music, and love. At the age of twelve in Jonas’s community, children are resigned with careers which they will train for and do for the rest of their lives.  People in the Jonas community are not given the autonomy of choice (Levy PG 50). Besides everything, they do what is chosen for them. The goal of the book review is to help us understand the significance of choice concerning human memory.

The community choices started with assigning a parent and partner to live with.  On the day of assignments, he wasn’t given a typical job but was selected to be the community memory keeper. “The chief explains that john was not given normal assignment but was selected to be the next receiver of the memory.” (Lowry)   The receiver has high responsibility and status, which is likely for him to be separated from the other classmates and community members, including close friend Fiona and Asher.  Jonas also was not allowed to play with other students and was to keep his training secret. He was allowed to lie, which was against the rule and norms of the community he was brought in.

The book was delightful as view the scenario of the Jonas family’s inhabitant who did not know good and evil (Levy PG 50). However, the community was protected from the harm; they were also exposed to wonderful life experience aspects.  The storyline of this book was complex enough to hold the attention of children and adults. I loved the way Jonas’ character developed from a scared boy to a brave man who was even ready to risk his future for the sake of his community.  The book teaches as the path of growing up (Levy PG 50).  At first, we are scared to take a step to do what we want and accept the new responsibility in life, but as we grow up, we slowly get used to it and even want more responsibilities.

John was now the memory receiver, and he was the only person that was allowed to access the books of the memories beyond school books and the rulebook that was given to every home.” The current receiver, who asks Jonas to call him the Giver, begins transferring those memories to Jonas, for the ordinary person in the community knows nothing of the past”. (Lowry) at Once Jonas can see the colors, he notices that the apple on the table is red. The question is how he knows, and he has never seen the color before.

The uncertainty of the ending is another aspect of this book that makes it more interesting. There is either the possibility of Jonas and Gabriel having frozen and died or finding somewhere to save their lives (Hidayat).  The story teaches the significance of memory of human life. When Jonas received the memory, he was able to have the autonomy to make a choice. Jonas made the sacrificial choice about for the betterment of his community. I want to recommend this book to anyone who wants the stories of dystopian worlds and anyone who would wish to understand more about the importance of the freedom of choice.
