Mitigation of an Active Shooter in School
In the current world full of terrorism, there might be a case whereby an active shooter attacks a learning institution. In such a case, the students must be well prepared to act effectively in case of any gunfire. In my case as a student, the following is what I would do in such a situation:
I would look around to see where the exits are. In the case of gunfire, the first response is how to leave the scene. The best way to escape is being familiar with the quick routes in school. Getting away from the shooter is the best option. Secondly, if avoiding is impossible, I would look for a hiding place. For this option, I would dart into any classroom around provided it has doors to lock and lock myself inside. A room near an elevator is preferred, Ergenbright, Charles, and Sean (23).
Informing the security team is another action. If I have a cellphone, I will press 911 after hiding, identify myself to the police and tell them of the situation in school. After informing them, I will remain silent with the phone so that the dispatcher can hear. Furthermore, I will make sure that there is no conversation between my colleagues and me. Use of social media is also not encouraged as it can reveal of my place of hiding to the shooter.
My last resort will be to fight back the shooter. I will throw anything at hand to the shooter. Because I am strong enough, if there is nothing to hit the gunman with, I will wrestle him. The best option will be to jump the gunman in case he stops to reload; this will only take seconds to accomplish. In case someone is hurt or calls for help, I will not be in a rush to open the door, I will only do so when am sure that the shooter is not around. When the police arrive, I will put my hands up as the police will not be sure who the suspect is. It will help in identifying the shooter.
