Both of my parents have math and computer science degrees. My Mom works as a software developer, and my Dad concentrates on IT systems infrastructure and architecture. As long as I can remember, our house was filled with various computers, network devices, and software packages. Growing up in such an environment and listening to my parents discussing technology almost every day significantly influenced my upbringing and development of interests. In my junior year of High School, together with my friends, we built a gaming server that we shared within our community of people that wanted to play on it. The process of building the server was very interesting; I enjoyed teamwork and collaboration with everyone involved.
For the past 150 years, science and technology have been the two main forces continuously changing our civilization. In the last 30 years, we have experienced tremendous growth in computers and related IT technologies. I would like to be a part of that journey. The journey that offers excellent employment opportunities and, most importantly, is very closely aligned with my interests.
There are a few reasons why I choose Math and Computer Science instead of a Computer Science degree. I have a strong interest in Mathematics, which lies at the very foundation of Computer Science. Binary operations, SQL language in a relational database, or RAID protection groups in modern storage systems are to name a few where Mathematics defines these interworking systems. I also believe that an undergraduate degree that is a little broader in scope prepares better for a narrower graduate school in focus. There is also a practical reason, where my research indicates that the Math and Computer Science program is a little less competitive in acceptance requirements than Computer Science.
Why the University of Illinois at Chicago since I am currently enrolled at the Champaign Urbana Campus?
For personal reasons, I need to stay at my home in Kildeer, but at the same time, I would like to continue my studies. Both my father and my oldest brother graduated from UIC. Their successful professional careers are the best testimonials of the quality of education that the University of Illinois at Chicago offers.
