Importance of Critical Literature Evaluation Skills
Critical literature evaluation is a skimming method and assesses the primary literature journals and articles in getting the necessary information to create your idea. It also involves critical thinking of a person and taking into account both the strengths and weaknesses in the literature under evaluation [1]. In line with that, it deepens the skills of a person in interpreting and identifying the literature that may undertake assessment.
Another importance in terms of literature evaluation skills when therapeutic dilemmas occur; for instance, adding or deleting a drug from an institution’s drug formulary, critical literature evaluation skills is essential [1]. A lot of institutions utilize different techniques and skills in evaluating literature, for example, the PROMPT method, which is a useful way to assess the credibility and potential value of the information of literature [ 2]. The P stands for provenance, which identifies where the information comes from? Are the reliable information source of information be considered a reliable authority on the subject? The R stands for relevance, which asks as about Is the information you have found relevant to the topic you are researching? Does it meet your specific requirements? The O stands for objectivity, which deals with the author or owner of the information, make clear their own and alternative views. The M stands for methods, which talks about the questions Were the methods appropriate? Do they permit the author to come to a sound and reasonable conclusion? The P stands for presentation, taking under considering the language, layout and structure, and if the information laid out and easy to navigate? The T stands for timeliness. Is the literature up-to-date? Did the article indicate the date of the publications? This type of method provides the importance of critical literature evaluation [2]. Furthermore, another method used is the Critical Appraisal Skills Programmed (CASP), whose main objective is to help a person molding their skills in looking and making sense of research evidence studies and applying it in their practice [3].
All in all, critical literature evaluation is assessing the information in making your own phrases thoughts based on the literature you selected. It also gives importance to literature evaluation skills when there are dilemmas present in the literature given. As mentioned above, with the different examples of critical literature review, we can quickly identify the appropriate literature for the topic given to us.
