Furloughing in Athletics
Utah athletics made a reasonable decision to furlough some of the athletes and employees. Unavoidable financial challenges due to the current pandemic forced Utah athletics to make difficult choices (Kostecka par. 2). This statement suggests that Utah athletics decided to reduce the running costs due to financial uncertainties. In this case, the management embraced furloughs of various lengths for each department employee. The decision to reduce the daily earning through furlough affected all employees, including executive cabinet and assistant coaches (Kostecka par. 2). This statement implies that Utah athletics did not target some people. Instead, the team adopted a fair financial approach to prevent a possible collapse due to the current pandemic. From a personal perspective, I feel that Utah athletics adopted a sustainable financial solution.
The decision taken by Utah athletics makes sense despite the high unemployment levels during the current pandemic. For instance, the Utah athletic department would lose between $50 and $60 million (Kostecka par. 2). This statement implies that the athletic department would lose a large portion of its $90 million budget. The loss would lead to unsustainable salaries, where people would receive their regular income for a short period only. Eventually, Utah athletics would lose the ability to pay its players and employees. The situation would lead to massive unemployment levels. Besides, I feel that the current decision will ensure that Utah athletics resume the league after the health conditions return to normal. Therefore, the current decision focuses on establishing a sustainable solution to ensure Utah athletics remain in operation after the pandemic.
