First impression
the meeting Lynn was convinced to storm out of the meeting first because she lacked self-efficacy. As discussed by Schwarzer (Ed.) (2013), it is the self-belief that one can execute the necessary qualifications, abilities, and behaviors to attain specific performance. The second reason was that Lynn failed to conduct a self-evaluation of her accomplishments in life for her professional development. Any instance of good self-evaluation would have led her to point to specific tasks and projects that highlight her best work, an example being the volleyball coaching she has been undertaking at school. Lynn also failed to observe herself well and turn her attention inwards and nonjudgmentally watch how she thought and felt. Though a good self-observation, she would have taken control of her emotions and sensations not to overwhelm her and cloud her judgment as supported by Calvete, Orue & Hankin, (2013). These three instances caused Lynn to apply her immediate reactions which showed her that she was incapable of fitting into the group, therefore affecting her cognitive processes that play a crucial part in social interactions.
Controlled processes are sequences of cognitive activities that are initiated intentionally. Here, a person is in control of their activities, after they have made a thoughtful process of their situation, made an evaluation, and therefore make decisions. They are slower and thus require effortful control, and cannot be conducted with other controlled processes simultaneously (Schwarzer (Ed.), 2013). In this case, Lynn could have thought of the importance of the Junior Achievement Service Learning call-out, as she had been advised by her advisor that it would suit her. For Lynn, she would have taken some time to overlook the physical appearances of Ryan, Ashley, and Becca’s physical appearances or the way they presented themselves to concentrate on getting the best out of the program. By so doing, she would have stayed throughout the meeting to gain insights on what was being offered, instead of rushing to call it quits.
To create a good first impression, Lynn ought to have self-confidence in herself, and not to compare herself with the three presenters. For her, she should have reflected on her abilities and her past achievements such as coaching volleyball at school which she enjoyed, to understand that she can reach higher horizons in her means. By so doing, she should not have felt intimidated by the physical appearance of the three presenters when she felt that she could not afford the expensive clothing they were adorning as supported
