Family Conflict and Career Choices
Family influence plays significant roles in the selection of career choices and interests in life. The conflict between Cisneros and her father exemplifies the negative impacts on the choice of career paths. They affect the capacity of people to select employment opportunities and social engagements that align with their values and beliefs. Cisneros’s interest is in writing while the father thinks that she should go to college to get a husband (Cisneros, 89). The father does not appreciate the roles of women in the society as seen in the way he canonizes his sons at the expense of Cisneros. “…my father meant my destiny would lead me to become someone’s wife.” The father does not appreciate writing as a career (Cisneros, 91). “…only daughter, the writer.”
Cisneros’ family expectations are similar to those of my family. Being the only daughter in a family of five meant little attention on the girl child. My father also seemed to like my brothers as compared to me (Cisneros, 90). He sent them to prestigious schools and thought they should pursue careers such as law, medicine, engineering and so forth. On the contrary, my father suggested that I did not need college education as a woman. Therefore, to a larger extent, the conflict in my family is akin to that of Cisneros’.
Therefore, it is imperative to note that family expectations play critical roles in influencing people’s decisions on career paths and social life. Cisneros’s case exemplifies the tragedy of family conflict regarding such essential life choices. She defies all odds to become a prolific writer, a career that she loves. The differences in expectations between Cisneros and her father are synonymous with what happens in most patriarchal societies.
