Lenz’s Law and Inductors

Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction states that when a fluctuating magnetic field is connected to a coil, an electromagnetic force is induced in it. The change in the magnetic field may be attributed to the change in the magnetic field strength through the movement of the magnet towards or away from the coil, or moving the coil away or from the magnetic field as may be necessary (Fairley, 2013 p 19). The magnitude of the electromagnetic force induces in the circuit increases in the same value as the rate of the change of flux.

Lenz Law

It states that when a variation in magnetic flux generates an electromagnetic force according to Faraday’s law, the polarity of the induced electromagnetic force behaves in a way that it produces a current that opposes the magnetic field that produced it. A negative sign is used in Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction to indicate that the induced electromagnetic force and the change in the magnetic flux have opposite signs (Fairley, 2013 p 21). A free-fall ride at an amusement park where the riders are suspended at a terrifying height and then plummet towards the ground in free fall uses a Lenz’s law mechanism to slow the drop.

Lenz’s law obeys the law of conservation of energy, and as the direction of the magnetic field that produces the current and the magnetic sphere of the current in a conducting material are in the same direction, then the two magnetic fields will sum up and create a current that is twice the magnitude. It causes the creation of a magnetic field that is stronger and will increase the current produced (Fairley, 2013 p 20). When an induced current produces a magnetic field that is equal and opposite to the direction of the magnetic field that produced it, its causes a self-resisting change in the magnetic field in the region in accordance to the Newton third law of motion.

Electricity and Magnetism

James Clerk Maxwell’s was a Scottish scientist acknowledge for his contributions to a classical theory of electromagnetic radiation that featured magnetism, electricity, and light for the first time. He gave a mathematical formula to Faraday’s work in electromagnetism. He reduced all of Faraday’s work into twenty equations with twenty variables that were later reduced to twelve by Oliver but they still regarded as Maxwell’s equations (Fairley, 2013 p 17).

His equations completely and accurately describe electromagnetism in terms of how electric fields can produce magnetic fields and the vice versa. He brought together optics and electromagnetism through the discovery of the speed of electromagnetic wave propagation being approximate as that of the speed of light (Fairley, 2013 p 18). Maxwell precisely described the reason for the stability of the rings of the planet Saturn a thing that had eluded scientists for over two hundred years.

He made import contributions to color theory by using algebra to prove Young’s theory. He produced the first colored image in the world. Maxwell made the first application of probability and statistics to describe the properties of molecules. His contributions are important to the understanding of different scientific concepts in the modern world and deserve the honor.

A spark is seen inside a toaster or toaster oven when it is turned off suddenly due to static electricity. Lights in a room dim when a refrigerator is turned on because of the high energy requirement to heat the thermostat in the fridge (Fairley, 2013 p 15). Using alternating currency for household electricity is beneficial than using a Direct current because the current flow changes directions and can convert voltage levels using a transformer for AC which helps to reduce hazards in the household.
