Dangers of Playing Video Games
Video games are, for sure, is a prevalent form of entertainment in today’s world. The research has indicated that video gamers spend a total of three billion hours playing or in front of their screens. The popularity of this form of entertainment has necessitated scientists to undertake research studies on effects on gamers, behavior, and their impact on their brains. The research aims to clarify how playing video games promotes an increase in social disconnection, creates addiction, and can limit academic progression.
One of the dangers that are caused by video game playing is increased social disconnect. Research has shown that the amount of time spent and the video player’s content has resulted in conflicts among the families in society. Video gaming has increasingly been associated with escalating relational and even physical antagonism and aggression in relationships and associations. In married individuals, video gaming has been associated with divorce and the breaking down of homes. The research is correct because if one partner takes a lot of time engaging in gaming, it means that the family unit income is affected as working time is reduced. Bonding time with the other family members is affected by this means in the end, the lack of balance will work out as a catalyst to family breakups. Video gaming does affect not only married individuals but also other social relationships too. Young individuals addicted to video gaming isolate themselves from basic and crucial social settings to engage in gaming. It is also true that individuals who are maybe low in maintaining relationships end up gaming to spend the extra time. It is very accurate that as an individual’s gaming time increases, the same person’s relationship with friends and the parents is reduced.
Addiction is another danger associated with the engagement of video gaming. The creators of the video games are business people and for them to ensure that they make good profits from their business is to make sure that their product is addictive, that is, the user keeps on using it all the time. In other words, I mean that video games are created and designed to be addictive. The main organ affected by video games is the brain, just as the addictive substances video gaming results in the ejection of a chemical known as the dopamine that reinforces and strengthens behavior. Research has shown that 75% of homes have at one gamer on the list in the United States. Video gaming is so addictive to the extent that individuals are willing to forego their marriages and even jobs to engage in gaming. In the teenagers’ case, they are so hooked on video gaming to the extent of threatening parents and guardians when they are asked to stop playing and put down the controller. Gaming is so addictive that the World Health Organization (WHO) has added gaming disorder as a disease.
Academic progression is also affected by video gaming; students who engage in video gaming are likely to have attention and concentration problems in school, resulting in abysmal grades. A lot of time taken by the student in gaming eats to the reading time and brought in doing homework. Research indicates that students involved in gaming perform poorly in the reading and the tests and exams. Due to video gaming’s addictive nature, the students may end up absconding classes to continue engaging in gaming activities, hence increasing the students’ chances to perform poorly. The negative health effects associated with video gaming still affect the students’ performance as school time is wasted as they go looking for medication.
