The Relationship Between Canada and the United States
Introduction
The relations between Canada and the united states of America have traditionally been observed to be close, bonded by a 5-500-mile border. . The two countries also happen to share security commitments in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). The Bilateral economic ties between Canada and the U.S have also been observed to deepen over the years in that the trade relations have been governed 1989 U.S-Canada free trade agreement. Relatively, ever since 1994 after the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canada has managed to maintain its position as the second largest trading partner of the united states with a total of up to one point six billion dollars of service trade in 2017. While tram stepped into power, there have been issues between Canada and the U.S, but even so, this has not hindered the existing relationship between the two countries as they have continued to trade together. The text will expand on the relationship of the two countries using paradigms such as Liberalism and Realism. The advantages and disadvantages of the two context that will be discussed will also be discussed under the two.
Liberalism
The relationship between Canada and the US is ever as strong as people from the two nations travel to each other’s country freely. . The trade relations between Canada and the U.S have always been balanced due to their close relationship. Furthermore, up to two-thirds of the U.S states regard Canada to be their top export market. This means that the two countries significantly contribute to each other’s GDP. . Canada happens to be the largest single trading partner of the U.S. in Canada. Trade is the most dominant feature of its economy. This means that the trade relations shared between the two countries adds significantly to the two countries annual GDP. For instance, in the U.S., the value of trade which involves imports and exports was about 20.7% of the total GDP in 2010, while in Canada it was about 49.3% in the same year 2019. . Auto parts and Autos represent the top exports of the U.S and second imports of Canada. The United States and Canada have managed to trade substantial volumes of similar good such as computer equipment’s, machinery, agricultural products basic chemicals and pharmaceuticals among many others.
This integration has only been possible through trade liberation that has been there over the past forty years. For example, the Automotive Agreement of 1965, which eliminated the existing tariffs that were charged during the shipment of auto parts and autos in between Canada and the U.S. through other trade agreements such as the Trade Agreement of 1989(FTA) and NAFTA which is under FTA, the bilateral tariffs that existed for various agricultural products were removed over a period of ten years culminating in 1988 2019. Liberalization contributed to an increase in bilateral trade especially in intermediate products between the two countries. Realism context
Canada is directly involved in the security of the U.S considering the two nations share a broader. Looking at the relations that are shared by the two countries in the context of realism it can be concluded that in most occasions the expectations that come with realism are somewhat supported at the phycological level. The present interstates cooperation’s that are shared by the two Nations are limited by each state need to have guaranteed security of its own in a global state of anarchy. A reality-based approach may take Canada back into the days during the second world war on the time of king Mackenzie when the basis of the foreign currency for Canada was functionalism. In using the word functionalism, the diplomats at that time simply meant that Canada as a Nation should look into various issues and involve itself in situations where it has specific skills and interests and resources that would allow the nation to make a significant contribution. . The political relationships between the countries have contributed significantly to a reality-based foreign policy.
Conclusion
The ever-increasing cultural and economic relations between the two countries despite the challenges that they face both politically and even socially is undeniable. The countries even share import and exports goods which makes the relationship even better. Also, the shared cultural and historical heritage has created the most trusted and beneficial relationship between the two nations.
