Celebrating Public Service in Florida
In February, Americans commemorate the rich history of African-Americans by celebrating the black history month. At the heart of the progress made by African-American communities are the many leaders who have in one way or another shaped the public service sector in Florida. Various leaders have made great sacrifices and helped foster equality. Furthermore, these leaders have inspired and paved the way for younger generations to also assist in fostering social equality and justice. Floridians continue to honor black women and men who are committed to diversity, equality and human dignity. Floridians should reflect on leaders who have been agents of change within Florida. For instance, the appointment of Justice Peggy Ann Quince the first African-American to be appointed to the Florida Supreme Court. This greatly influenced the induction of many young black lawyers who now had a chance to practice law and scale to all levels in the state’s judiciary. Additionally, the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame has honored Floridians who have positively contributed to creating social awareness and justice through judicial transformation.
The former justice of the supreme court of Florida embodies the progress that has been made in the judicial system in Florida. Born in 1948, Peggy Ann Quince was the second African-American to serve as chief justice in the supreme court of Florida. She has been in charge of various departments in the judiciary where she has diligently worked to transform social justice positively. For instance, she served as a judge on Florida’s Second District Court of appeal. On July 1, 2008, Quincy assumed the role of the Chief Justice of the supreme court of Florida for two years. Additionally, she was the first woman to serve as the head of any branch of Florida government.
Moreover, Quince holds the record as the only Supreme Court justice to be appointed by two governors simultaneously. This was because her term began at the exact moment as with the governor-elect and to avoid any controversy regarding her appointment the then-governor Jeb Bush jointly agreed on appointing her with Governor Lawton Chiles. Her diligence and dedication made her one of the most sorts after legal practitioners in Florida. Quince has for a very long time been at the heart of justice reforms. Similarly, many African-American leaders before her made tremendous sacrifices in reforming public service delivery in Florida. African-American leaders in Florida have been actively involved in the transformation of civil service delivery in the state from as early as the 19th century. During this time access to essential social amenities was limited for African-American communities.

Conclusively, African- American leaders have made a tremendous influence in the public service sector in the state of Florida and the whole country at large. Black history month helps Americans appreciate the progress that has been made by African-Americans communities over the years. The contributions made by minority communities are often overlooked. Some of the most revolutionary leaders the country has seen have come from African-American communities and made significant contributions to the public service sector. These leaders should be appreciated for their exceptional service to the state.
