Catechism
Question 1
According to catechism, signs, and symbols are essential for the liturgy. These signs and symbols are important during liturgy because they occupy a central part of human lives. Physical symbols and signs make people perceive and express spiritual realities. They also signify that people can obtain God’s grace as they participate in liturgical symbols and signs. The signs and symbols that mark the liturgical life came from the signs of covenants received by the chosen people from God. Some of the liturgical signs from the Old Testament include the Passover, consecration of priest and kings, circumcision, anointing, and laying hands on sacrifices by priests.
Question 2
The role of music and signing in worship is that they help in teaching people the gospel. Music and singing spiritual songs act as a compartment of the Christian faith. Composing spiritual songs helps in making the Christian faith memorable. Hymns tend to instruct Christians in the ways of the Good News by touching and engaging their minds and hearts. Also, music helps people connect to God in unique ways and expressing their love for God. Music and signing add to liturgy a lot more than just spoken words. According to the catechism, music fulfills the functions of signs in a meaningful manner. It connects to liturgical actions more closely and fosters beauty in prayers.
Question 3
The explanation as to why Christians can create God’s image is that the liturgical icons and sacred images represent Christ. Notably, Christians agree to the fact that the incomprehensible and invisible God cannot be represented. However, images and icons help in ushering in the idea of the Son of God. Also, Christians believe that iconography expresses images that the Scriptures and the Gospel communicate. Although many religions forbid this practice, Christians believe that God entrusts them with the church’s unwritten and written traditions. They use art to represent the image of Christ, who is worshiped through them. As a result, Christianity has clear reasons why these images are acceptable.
