Boundaries
Boundaries are essential in mapping since it enables governing bodies to determine how specific populations change over time. Tracking and monitoring population segments are necessary for budget allocation for cities and counties. It is also a determinant for the development of roads and infrastructure and the enforcement of policies within an area. Boundaries in the United States are mainly drawn after census when it is ascertained that a population within the same locality share the same aspects in life.
Diversification is among the traits that determine the segmentation of a population, especially in a state such as California, where the amount of race diversification is significant. Boundaries are also defined by rivers, mountains, forests, urbanization, and profiles of major highways.
According to statistics in the World Population Review (2020), California is the top state with the highest diverse population in the United States. Most of the boundaries are related to the dominant race in the region’s population. An example is the Riverside county, where my high school is located; most of the people are from Hispanics and Latinos backgrounds. Also, about 10% of the population are from Asians descent who migrated to the United States in search of opportunities, education, or refuge. Only a slight percentage are non-Hispanics in the region. The boundaries in this region are based on the surrounding Santa Ana river and the type of race that dominates the area, which is Hispanics.
Riverside County is located about an hour from downtown Los Angeles. Most of the city and the surroundings do not speak English as a first language but Spanish. By this, it is correct to say that CA has the highest rate of inclusion in the United States. International students who come to study in CA find it easy to settle there and relate to people. They do not feel segregated because most of the population came from a different background than cities dominated by Caucasian Americans.
People who migrate into Whites dominated regions tend to feel excluded; nevertheless, discriminated against. Living and interacting with people in Riverside County and the neighboring area has always given me a sense of belonging. I have never experienced any unfair treatment or discrimination of any nature.
Different cities in California experience almost the same form of inclusion and equity, as seen by the acceptance of diverse races and distribution of resources, respectively. For instance, there are quite a several public schools that are very accommodative to foreigners. Consequently, migrants find it easy to adapt to the living conditions in regions within CA.
My high school borders Corona city and Riverside county, which are two places I frequently visit. I do not notice much difference in both areas since they both exhibit diverse communities. They also have the same urban planning, structure of houses, and street appearance.
Another neighboring city is Los Angles, where the proportion of Chinese exceeds other ethnic communities. Consequently, most of the businesses are Chinese owned. Arguably, the major contributor to the CA economy are companies owned by international communities. Additionally, to creating a suitable place for residing, inclusion and equity are essential factors that contribute to the development of any society.
California’s economy is from agricultural activities in the area. Most workers who work in farms and produce sections are migrants. The equal opportunity provided by CA’s inclusive nature has made it the second-largest urban economy in the United States and third in the world. The boundaries identified above have proven beneficial in the social and economic growth of California.
Additionally, the boundaries above help create a conducive living condition for people who are most likely to experience exclusion by discrimination and prejudice. Consequently, areas with such levels of inclusion and equity exhibit safe living conditions for all members of the population. The boundaries also create employment and advanced education opportunities for people living in the region. Priority for job openings and scholarships is given to residence within the radius.
Boundaries also enhance the community feel of an area. People living within the same locality develop a common culture that allows them to create a history of the place. As much as they may be foreigners to the region, living within boundaries establishes a rapport accepted by everyone in the community.
People from diverse backgrounds living within a specific boundary provide differentiated skills useful for the economic development of a place. Different types of businesses from various backgrounds develop in an area that contributes to the region’s economy.
Boundaries are majorly formed for mapping purposes. It is done based on various aspects of a community, which is mostly the dominant characteristic. The borders can be virtual or geographical. The latter is derived from census data, which indicates race, socio-activity, the economic activity of the people, or the people’s culture. Geographical boundaries are based on physical attributes of the area, such as rivers, mountains, urbanization, or highways. Boundaries are essential in determining the inclusive nature of a community. If a society is built on a diversified racial aspect, the area tends to be welcoming to foreigners and less discriminative. Boundaries also help in the distribution of resources whereby the society is served based on its economic activity and needs.
