Question 2
The conversation between Troy turns towards Troy is behaving towards because women other than his wife p[primarily because Bono is suspecting that Troy is cheating on his wife, Rose. There several actions that Bono uses to conclude that troy is suspecting Troy of being an adulterer. Bono notices that Troy is unusually purchasing many drinks from “that Alberta girl.” Troy is taking a close interest in pleasing the Alberta girl, and this is why Bono says, “it’s alright to buy her one drink. That’s what you call being polite. But when you wanna be buying two or three…that’s what you call eyeing her” (1158). Troy denies these accusations arguing that he is just out to buy a friend drinks, and he has nothing to do with the Alberta girl. Additionally, Bono suspicion is supported by the fact that he has noticed that Troy walks around the Alberta girl’s house frequently instead of staying at Taylor. However, Troy denies these accusations saying he has always been faithful to his wife for many years; they have stayed together.
Question 6
The constant conflict between Troy and his father was the reason that he left his home when he was at the age of 14 years old. The last day that Troy left his home, they had a bitter confrontation with his father because of a girl he was having an affair with who was thirteen years old.
Troy has a negative attitude towards his father because after he was given the responsibility of taking care of the mule, he defied this order and instead went to have sex with the girl in the creek. His father found them, and he went ahead to rape the girl. Troy became so angry and ended up whipping his father. After the fight, Troy had to leave home as he saw his father as cruel and unloving towards his children. After he left his home, he learned to play baseball while in prison, where he met Bono, who became his pillar in learning everything about the game. Wilson stresses that Troy would have been a thief in his twenties if he had not developed an interest in baseball. The implication between Troy baseball careers is that it is hard for him to find a professional club to play for. However, he was outstanding and talented while the white career of white players was rewarding as they have easily signed b big clubs. Baseball to a black person like Tory was the pathway of living a comfortable life, but racial discrimination favored whites more even if they were not as talented as Troy.
Question 22
The significance of Troy’s speech to Mr. Death is that he is not afraid to die. He does not fear dying but assures Mr. Death that if he is going to die, he will wage a fight against death. The speech is echoed at the end of the play when Troy decides to construct a fence to protect his own family and property, which shows his willingness to protect his family until he dies. The scene shows Troy’s views and attitude about the world has completely changed when one loses a person close to him or her to death. Troy decides to finish building the fence after the death of Alberta, which makes Troy see death as an enemy who has come to destroy his family. Therefore, Troy decides to finish the fence, which acts as a reminder that it should be our effort to protect the family and be there for them when they need our help the most.
