Being Deeply Unaware of Our Skills
Human character is considered to be uniquely different because of the unique skills that they possess. This evolves into the state of self-awareness an individual develops as they progress in life. A self-aware individual comes up with solutions to specific problems they face at a particular time in life. They are thus equipped with the ability to identify their strengths, weakness, and applying them appropriately. The development of skills is majorly reliant on the environment where one grows in society. This initiates the building blocks of skill development and identification in specific areas of life. Most people in society are aware of their capabilities, while a vast majority is not cognizant of the same. Being able to identify specific actions that are required to solve particular problems is a unique aspect that not all people possess. As human beings, we are uniquely distinguished by the awareness of our skills and abilities. This is because we all have skills, but not all are aware of their abilities.
“Everyone has skills, but there is such a thing as being deeply unaware of our skills”, is a quote developed by Richard Bolles, to show how significant it is to have self-awareness. He believes that have self-awareness gives an individual a sense of confidence while handling specific issues. In the job market, for example, employers look for people who have desirable personal skills that can handle tasks assigned. Most people find themselves in interviews where they are fully qualified but are unable to adequately describe their strengths or weaknesses. This is due to their inability to analyze the job requirements and identify how best they can solve the duties assigned. Their inability to respond to such questions makes them unsuitable for the position because they are unaware of their capabilities.
People’s personalities grow and take shape depending on the environment where they are brought up. This translates to the dependence of skill growth on the nurture and nature of upbringing. Most people brought up in a volatile environment tend to develop much more aggressive skills compared to those brought up in non-volatile environments. People who grow up in calm environments tend to handle issues reluctantly because they believe in having a grip on the outcomes. This develops from the perception they have from the five common senses. They react based on what is perceived by the senses and cannot strive to have a sense of self-awareness. This is also characterized by the dependency on confirmation by their peers who are of similar mindsets. They feel comfortable getting affirmation from people who they can relate to and shy away from people who challenge their sense of thought. This hence inhibits them from discovering their strengths and weaknesses.
Self-improvement is an important aspect in the growth of an individual’s ability to recognize and tackle issues. This raises the skill level of an individual concerning the identification of their strengths and weaknesses. Having good knowledge of one’s skillset gives them an edge when handling responsibilities since they can direct their energy constructively. Most people in the world do not acknowledge the need to have a self-evaluation of their skills. This has led to the deplorable state of self-improvement, which makes most people feel they are competent to perform different responsibilities. This element makes people not apply for jobs since they feel unprepared for the responsibilities. It is in this context that the statement “everyone has skills, but there is such a thing as being deeply unaware of our skills” by Richard Bolles translates to a true depiction of what currently exists in society.
