Basics of decision making

Humans often find themselves in situations where they are supposed to choose from many options. Making decisions is very important because all the choices have consequences. Different people make different decisions and some make better and wiser decisions than others. The factors that lead to different choices is the different experiences, the background of a person, and the principles of the person making the decision.

Some experts and laymen have said that the decision-making process is scientific. This is not the case because anybody can make decisions whether they are learned or not. If decision making was a scientific process, it would be merely for the intellectuals in society ( Djik 2008). Factors affecting decision making are principles, inhibitors, and inciters. When making any kind of decisions, principles affect decision making positively while the other two affect decision making negatively. ( Ullman 2006). Before undertaking decision making one should take into consideration the above factors. Some people before making a decision ask for advice from people who have similar situations and others research about their situations. In other instances which do not need much thinking before making a decision, people toss a coin or even take a vote.

People end up making either right or wrong decisions. Wrong decisions are mostly made when one lacks self-control or when one is in fear of making a wrong decision (Xie 2008). When people practice self-control before making a decision, they can make decisions that are beneficial in their lives. Self-control helps a great deal because it allows one to study the situation keenly and get to understand it well. This will prevent the making of hush decisions without minding the consequences. ( Husted 2007). When one receives bad news, they are demoralized. However, a good decision maker should take whatever challenges they are facing and use them as opportunities. They should take that as a lesson so that they avoid similar mistakes in the future. ( Djik 2008 p81)

Irrespective of the situation one is facing decision making is important in coming up with the best solution. Some problems may arise after a decision is made. One should be ready for anything so that they are not affected negatively by bad news. Situations that require immediate attention should not be a cause of pressure to a good decision-maker. One should keenly study the cause of the problem and devise the best way to solve the problem to avoid future occurrences. People should avoid others for their poor decisions (Rohrich 2007).

Conclusion

Decision making is not a scientific process but it is a life skill that every person is faced within their lifetime. One should be very diligent with temperamental issues. Before making a decision one should consult with experienced people to avoid making mistakes that would later inflict pain and regrets to the decision-maker.
