Backup Strategies
Companies and organizations back up there data for various reasons; however, the main reason for backup is for uncertainty, the fear of data intrusion leading to loss of important data. There are various types of data backup strategies used by companies according to their considerations, including full, incremental and differential backups.
A full backup is the backup of all data in another location. It is, therefore, the most comprehensive backup type because it involves copying the whole data to another location (Wertheimer et al. 2015). Full backup leaves nothing to chances in the form of data or information. It is done with a view that in cases of intrusion in one place, the other place will provide whole data.
Incremental backup type deals with information that has changed since the last backup was done. It is an adjustment of the existing data based on reviews and new data that may be superseding the earlier stored (Tekade, Groose and Mutalik, 2015).
Differential backups mean copying the data changed since the last full data backup. Therefore it is related to incremental data. It provides a way of backing up changed data to the same convenient location as all the new data (Li et al. 2019). It, therefore, needs a lot of time and space to run.
Identifying appropriate data strategy involves the process of identifying the data that needs backup protection, not all data need protection. Defining the backup goal is the next step before considering what the business is protected against by the backup and lastly developing a backup strategy.
