Arts and architecture of Ancient Greece
The Mycenaean architecture along the Citadel construction allows easy comparison of components and techniques used in building towards creating supportive archways and vaults; Citadel was constructed on high rocky outcroppings that enhanced natural fortification. The thick cyclopean walls reflected the need for protection and self-defense in Citadel sites centered along the megaron. The gate is famous for its use of the relieving arch. The lions represent cultural influences that existed from the Ancient Near East. Mycenae also served as a home for tholos tomb that was believed to be the treasure of Atreus due to the wealth of the grave goods.
Knossos had a long history of human habitation; these places were built around a central court that contained numerous storage areas. It had bulky walls. The pavements and column bases were constructed on stones of different colors, filled with pottery and remarkable objects like the ceramic snake that acted as the Goddess. The throne room contained a central palace sanctuary that had the temples repositories. Thus it served as the heart of the palace, also served as the residential quarters in an area that was termed as the queen’s megaron.
The sanctuary of Apollo was located on the southern tip of the slopes of the mountain. The temple was made on bronze and later stone that was majorly for the god by the Amphictyons formed from the sacred treasures with one architect. These were the place where the oracle of the sun god Apollo was housed. Acted as the center of cultural activities where the Pythian games were played that attracted athletes and musicians from all over Greek
