Around the World in 72 Days; Ida Tarbell: The Impact and The Echoes
As late as the 1890s, women’s roles in society were being questioned. It took women’s intervention in journalism to understand what men can do; women can also get involved and be successful.
The movie demystifies stunt journalism, where a woman in media tries to partake on an unknown journey across the world to bring news to her people. Nellie Bly has been in the public’s eyes for some time due to her kind of investigative journalism. Creating a need and partaking different roles in society to acquire first-hand information about different operations and whether the public deems fit for humans. Before the purported journey, the lady had unleashed several rots in the society, thus her populous status.
A world journey was a risk, one that few had tried with minimal success stories. However, Bly was not taking any prisoners and decided to push on with her quest. At the tail end of it all, she returned home a winner. Having gone through the different challenges of the journey, Nellie had a story to tell, which has impacted lives generations after generations.
What was very striking about the film was Nellie Blys’ general outlook during the journey. Under normal circumstances, a journey involves a lot of packing for fear of the unknown. You would expect this could be the case since the reporter had not initially made the trip, so she had very little information about the same. But she took a bold decision and carried her usual bag and a coat. One would think she was very knowledgeable about the journey. Worth noting is the storyline, which depicts success in the slightest of opportunities and, of course, with minimal resources at ones’ disposal. The film has played a significant role in women’s freedom and the need to give people equal opportunities.
