In the fifteenth and sixteenth century, this was an era known as old imperialism. However, during the late seventeenth century, it brought New Imperialism. Which was characterised by European states who formed vast empires mainly in Africa? The new era of imperialism was established for the organisation of the native areas, and this was to benefit the colonial power. New Imperialism took place between 1870 and 1914 (McLaren, 2011). Nations from Europe underwent through the second phase of the Industrial Revolution which enhanced steel production, transformed transportation and construction of the ship and also spurred economic growth. There was also the development of railway and “electrical power generation” which led to the complete extension of industries.
The policy for expansion was necessitated by political needs that were linked to the growth of kingdoms. In the early 18th century, “Great Britain colonised a larger number of colonies. The main factors that led to New Imperialism include (McLaren, 2011). Financial reasons, the European nations were more concerned with how they would expand their market all over the world for them to sell the products internationally and domestically. The need for non-expensive labour and constant supply raw materials such as steel, oil and rubber. Military reasons most nations from Europe were concerned with armed power, national security and chauvinism. Nation security was the main factor that led Britain to settle in Egypt (McLaren, 2011). The other reason was protecting the “Suez Canal” which shortened the route Europe to South Africa and Asia. The other reason that led to New Imperialism was spread of Christianity, the introduction of medicines, and laws. Enhanced knowledge of medicine helped build imperialism — the American expansion across the Pacific during the 19th century. The expansion of Maritime in the Pacific was compelled by commerce which had positive effects on the “U.S. foreign policy”.
The idea of freedom differed from how Americans viewed their tolerance on religion, the “puritans” were looking forward to freedom, but they did not get the idea of tolerating. They came to America to seek religious freedom. There was also a rebellion against slavery led by “Douglass” where he focused on highlighting its cruelty and unjust. He proposed on ensuring the value of the life of humankind.
