Thanks to the actors who portray them in the film, movie characters become famous. And it’s not shocking that it’s so difficult to picture how a film will be like if someone else portrayed the main role. However, there are several cases when actors were substituted in Hollywood films, or the casting process didn’t go as planned. Actors that were correctly cast in their parts include Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix as Joker in the Dark Knight and Joker, respectively, Marlon Brando and Al Pacino in the Godfather. These actors fit in the portrayed characters’ shoes in the film, making the audience feel and be entangled by emotionally experiencing what the characters are going through. Actors such as Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes in the Batman Begins did not engage the audience deeply with her characters’ portrayal. Christopher Nolan casting Katie Holmes was not a wise decision for the first film replacing her with Maggie Gyllenhaal in the sequel film.
Great actors understand how to use facial expression, voice quality, and body movement to immerse the virtual experience audience. Joaquin Phoenix, Al Pacino, and Marlon Brando are my top actors who portrayed quality physical characteristics. Their voices and facial expression spoke a lot for the audience to perceive the experience. Heath Ledger understood how to bring fear to the audience as he wrecks the Gotham City. With the paintings on his face audience could not predict the facial expression like Joaquin Phoenix in Joker.
An actor portraying an unconvincing performance is because the actor was incompetent in the role, therefore miscast. An actor must understand the nature of the character he or she will portray and should not be viewed in one dimension. The actor to fit in the role of intense research must be considered for the actor to have a deeper understanding of the character. An actor who does not utilize the time for research will be incompetent for the role and, therefore, a wrong fit.
Directing
Films that are considered great are the cast, theme, visual style, subject matter, editing, and cinematography the director has chosen to use for his or her film. Christopher Nolan is one of the best current working directors. As an audience, we see how the director manipulates his style to capture our attention. Since his debut film, the director has produced eleven films, Following to his latest Tenet, where most of them linger on time as a subject matter. Time is not captured in the Dark Knight trilogy, while the rest (Following, Memento, The Prestige, Insomnia, Dunkirk, Tenet, Interstellar, and Inception) are all time-oriented. Nolan’s style of directing is unique, making every film a blockbuster. The cinematographers and music composers, such as Hans Zimmer, strengthen the bizarre storytelling using time dilation, keeping the audience guessing what will happen next.
Nolan is partial to elliptical editing, hand-held camera work, documentary-style lighting with natural settings using the real location for filming rather than studio work. Hence, it is regarded as a postmodern and auteur filmmaker, giving his films a personal and unique stamp. His films’ key element is embedded storylines and crosscutting between different time frames, and his movies regularly feature unconventional soundscapes and images and ideas influenced by mathematics. Nolan’s work examines life and epistemology concepts, like subjective perception, hedonism, memory manipulation, and ethical relativism, the essence of time, causality, and personal identification building. His characters, confronting the anxieties and fears of isolation, remorse, envy, and greed, are frequently severely impacted, obsessed, and morally dubious. In his work, Nolan often utilizes his real-life experiences as motivation.
