Achilles Discussion
According to (Zanker, 2014), Achilles is the main character in Homer’s epic “The Iliad.” He is arrogant, and this is evident when he begins to get into an argument with the leader of the Greek Troops “Agamemnon.” Since he was publicly put to shame because Achilles was awarded a prize for his contribution during the battle. Achilles is the greatest worrier, in the history of the Greeks. He dares to face his enemies. Humans can learn a lot from the character of Achilles of being bold and courageous to cope up with the problems that may come their way. From the character of Achilles, humans can learn how to find a way to rise above the agony they are going through and become heroes and heroines in their society.
According to (Zanker, 2014), Achilles wanted to demonstrate to the Greeks that they would not excel in war if he did not participate alongside them in battle. This is the vengeful part of Achilles character, and this should serve to other leaders that they should ensure they can be relied on by those whom they are leading. He is also arrogant, and after being shamed by the leader of Agamemnon, he withdraws himself and is men from the war, which meant they would continue to fight without their greatest warrior from this aspect future leaders should not withstand insults being hurled at their dignity. He not only withdraws himself and his troops from war, but he also wishes that a disaster will strike them this is evident in the book, (Zanker, 2014), “…Bid him assist the Trojans, let the Achaeans be hemmed in the sterns of their ships and perish on sea-shore.”
Achilles has a brutal, futile, cruel and true heroism character. His character is further not suitable for contemporary leadership, as he is merciless, a killer and temperamental, and this should not be the case with leaders in the society, as the leaders should have leadership quality that will best serve the interests of their subjects. There are so many aspects of Achilles that can be avoided by leaders in society apart from his courageous character.
