A Disability Revolution
The movie was released this year in March. Nicole Newnham and Jim Lebrecht directed it. Jim was part of the group of disabled individuals who attended the camp Joined in 1971. In the camp, people with disabilities came together and shared their challenges in the outside world. They also took part in team-building activities such as swimming and singing. They could talk about things that other teens talk about at the camp, such as cramps and being horny. They had found a home away from their physical homes (Tallerico, 2020). At the camp, they were empowered and educated on various social issues, such as dating. From the documentary, people living with disabilities go through a lot of challenges.
The society has a dreadful perception about them. Disabled people are viewed as an object of fear, pity, and loneliness. At five years old, Judy was denied the opportunity to join school by her local school’s principle. From the documentary, the disabled were taken to an institution in New York. The institution did not have enough facilities to cater to many disabled people; there were very few counselors and care tackers. Every single individual had a 3 minutes meal. They lack parental support and love (“Crip Camp | A Disability Revolution,” 2020). They disabled are neglected and often viewed as not being whole persons. Some find challenges engaging in relationships or finding a partner since before they are viewed as men or women, they are often viewed as disabled. There is very little legal law that protects them, and very often, these laws are stripped away. In 1977, led by Judy, their chairperson, they organized a demonstration to show their dissatisfaction with the law. The camp outside a building in New York for 11 days, night and day, before their plea is hard. People living with disabilities fear running for political seats in various places since society still views them as weak individuals. Jim was not allowed to join her sister in the scout club since he could not walk. Other kids often asked Judy if she was sick. They faced lots of barriers and challenges in society.
