A CLEAN, WELL-LIGHTED PLACE

Introduction

The story analyzed in this paper was done by Ernest Hemingway and got published for the first time in 1933. When writing this work, it was noted that the author utilized the precise style. The story is all about two waiters who were conversing in a café before the place was closed up and the people had to go home because it was at night. Unfortunately, some customers were still in, and this meant that the waiters had to remain behind. But one of the waiters was shown to be so anxious about going home so that he could meet his wife. However, the other waiter seemed to be more worried about an old man who sat on the table. At this point the waiters found themselves addressing the issue of life without their knowledge. On the other hand, they could discuss anyone who passed along the place where they were. It is believed that the story took place in Spain during the WWI (World War I) period.

General comments

The author narrates the story in the third person although the narrator is kept anonymous. The author introduced three characters who were the main ones. Also, there is an old man who was shown to be sitting in the café alone taking a brandy. As elaborated by the author, the man had previously attempted to commit suicide, and he always wished if his life could come to an end.

Nevertheless, throughout the Story, the author uses active declarative and short sentences. Furthermore, there is frequent repetition of keywords. Also, the characters keep on speaking meaning that the story highly depends on dialogue made to keep the flow of the context.

Specific comments:

Notably, the author tends to value the issue of recognizing what was not incorporated to be so crucial like that which was included in the text. This was identified as a unique trait of the author which strongly stood out in his literary works. In the current literature, this approach of the authors was seen when he the waited who had longed to be with his wife at home was shown to have faced disappointments during that night since he could not have left the place while customers were still present. In the same manner, there was no clear reasoning as per why the old man wanted to take away his life.

Thesis:

A clean well-lighted place is meant to be a suitable place where those who are distressed get satisfaction. As presented by the old man who is distressed he does find a place where he felt more secure and relieved from his stressful condition.

The Body Paragraphs

The author incorporated various themes in his work. The presented ideas included the subject of; escape, connection, and loneliness. The concept of isolation is introduced through an old man. The man was offered to be seated alone sipping his brandy in a café. As revealed by Hemingway (1933), “at some point the man had contemplated suicide. Surprisingly, the man had wished that for his life to come to an end”. The feeling of the old man was contrary to what the young waiter felt about returning home and meeting his wife. This demonstrated the theme of connection whereby the young waiter was connected with his family, but the old man felt no connection to keep him lively. However, it was demonstrated that the old man desired to have a relationship with people and that was the reason why he went to be around people even if he was sitting alone.

Similarly, the older and the younger waiter had connections which were seen in how they interacted and shared their concerns. Additionally, it was revealed that the more former waiter could easily connect with those who are lonely and the reader was shown to be aware of that. In the same manner, while at the bar place, the older writer was shown to connect with the bartender although the bartender failed to give him attention.

The author tends to use stylistic devices in his work. The significant invention that was noted was symbolism which was used throughout the story. The author presented, “the old man was deaf”; which was a term that was symbolically used. In this case, the author used the word to offer that the man was sorrowful since he was not connected to others. Additionally, it is shown that the man at the counter of the bar was unpolished something which may have been used symbolically to present that the hygiene of the man was not quite right. Probably he made a comparison of the cleanliness they had at the hotel and the one that was at the bar and noticed the difference.

Similarly, the word light as in the title of the story could have been used by the writer as a form of symbolism. The choice of words utilized by the old waiter was a form of symbolism. He indicated that great lighted-café was all that was needed for one to get away their despair and loneliness. All in all the old waiters’ views were seen to be contrary to the thoughts of the young waiter. The young waiter was more confident and felt youthful aspects which the old waiter did not have.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the story utilizes the young and the old writer as well the old man to bring out the significant themes of loneliness, escape and connectedness. In this case, the waiter seemed to be more worried about an old man who sat on the table. At this point the two waiters found themselves addressing the issue of the meaning of life without their knowledge. This demonstrated their interconnectedness

Restate Thesis

According to the author, the solution of those who experienced loneliness was to have a clean well light place. At such a situation, the distressed persons were likely to encounter and focus on life in a new way. For instance, while the old man was in the well light place, he could enjoy the company of individuals he had around and felt that life was much better compared to how he had been experiencing it alone.

Revisit Each Major Point of Your Essay

As shown by Hemingway (1933), “such as the best place for those who felt lonely and needed connecting with others.” The presented young man knew the secret that laid in this place and how important it was unto him. This was shown in how he just wished to be around people even If he was alone; he could realize changes.
