Professional Development Plan

Summary of Goals

In a professional career, creating professional development plan goals, both short-term and long-term, is very important. My first short-term goal is to pass this nursing course to ensure I get a practice license by the end of this quarter. My second short-term goal is that by June 2021, I will take the NCLEX examinations and pass on the first attempt; this will show that I am ready to apply the knowledge and critical thinking skills I have learned in school as a registered nurse. My third short-term goal is that by the 30th of April 2021, when I will finish my clinical program, I would have made the best out of the program by; on a daily basis, I plan to apply the best of my knowledge, communication and leadership skills to ensure patient safety and create valuable connections with my teammates. My fourth short-term goal is that by July, I would have found a conducive facility to work with and gain more knowledge and appropriate experience as a residency nurse.

The first long-term goal I plan to pursue is enrolling for a doctorate to advance my career; I plan to achieve this goal by January 2023. To achieve this dream goal, I have started consulting with experts who will guide me on accomplishing this goal. My second long-term goal is that by 2023, I would have gained leadership skills that will help me become a more dependable person in the nursing profession in the future. This goal is fundamental because it will help me assume a management position after gaining three to five years. Thirdly, I plan to start my clinic in the next ten years, where I will be offering nursing care services to the community for free. This goal has been inspired by my experience as a nurse, where I have realized there is a huge gap in healthcare services accessibility between the rich and the poor. Finally, my fourth long term goal is to become a Respiratory Nurse Specialist (RNS) in ten years time; due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, researchers cite it to long term respiratory ailments; therefore, I plan to develop expertise in respiratory conditions; this will assist me to become handy in the future even after Covid-19 is eradicated.

Achievement plans of goals

To attain these goals, I plan to put more hard work into this course to pass with high grades. I am spending at least three hours per day studying and reviewing various coursework materials to understand this course’s concepts. Besides, I am creating a social network with my seniors to help me find a residency program. The other way I want to achieve short-term goals is by developing a habit of using scholarly and evidence-based articles to enrich my understanding of the evolving nursing issues. When it comes to long-term goals, I plan to gain more work experience to continue with the nursing practice. I want to improve my inter-professional communication to help me become diverse in the nursing field. These skills are essential when one assumes a management position since many communication and leadership will be required. Lastly, I plan to achieve my long-term career advancement by filling several applications to be considered for a master’s and a doctorate program where I will learn and gain expertise in respiratory health.

I intend to make a significant difference by employing coalitions in my nursing experience. The collaborations are a vital part of my work, particularly for patients requiring intensive care. Patients’ treatment is carried out improperly in the best way and not at the worst without coordination between doctors, clinicians, physicians, and many supporters (Scully, 2015). The only way to achieve this is to continuously flow the patient’s knowledge and standard treatment among nurses and doctors, based on their wishes and the nurse or doctor’s experience. In trying to bridge my learning experience with teaching, I intend to implement the formation process.

Barriers

Every goal has hindrances that prevent one from attaining these goals. One of the impending barriers that may affect my career advancement goal is failing to pass these courses. I need to have a practice license, which can only be achieved by completing this course. Another barrier that can hinder me from achieving the above goals is procrastination. I know I am postponing the plan to achieve my goals is the beginning of a huge failure. I need to overcome this habit that can shatter my dreams. I have a habit of postponing things that were supposed to be today to be done tomorrow. I know this is a bad habit that I must overcome to achieve my career goals. Another barrier that can interfere with my plans is my weakness. I have a weakness of being impatient, which makes me do things without planning, which results in unexpected results. Lack of patient, amongst other faults I have, might affect my goals. I am approaching my final examinations, and the NCLEX assessment is also around the corner; I am also overwhelmed by the clinical shifts, reports and journals; therefore, I am on the verge of exhaustion and stress.

Solutions to barriers

One way to overcome the above barriers is through learning how to manage time. One of the essential skills I have learned in this university is how to manage time. I plan to work diligently to complete this course by planning my time well and looking for resources to prepare me to pass this course. I am also preparing and reviewing my goals in time and planning to get a mentor who will take me through this professional development journey. I believe the desire to grow and advance must overpower the pains of getting there. To overcome stress and exhaustion from the clinical shifts and the need to do revisions and plan for my residency program. To relieve stress and fatigue, I plan to do a daily session of meditation and exercises. Therefore, I consider these solutions as significant steps that will help me develop emotionally and professionally.
